ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government (FOG) will host “Transparency in Practice”, a continuing legal education training seminar Wednesday, June 8 at the Albuquerque Journal auditorium.
The FOG continuing legal education course has been approved by the New Mexico State Bar for five general credits and one ethics credit. The seminar is open to both attorneys and members of the public interested in transparency matters.
The full-day program will include a panel discussion on legislative transparency with outgoing New Mexico Speaker of the House Brian Egolf, Sen. Mark Moores, Fred Nathan, executive director Think New Mexico, a nonprofit thinktank, and Heather Ferguson, executive director of Common Cause New Mexico, a good-government advocacy group.
An additional presentation “Records in the Real World”, will be led by Albuquerque City Clerk Ethan Watson on the practicalities and challenges of fulfilling requests under the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA).
Other discussions will include recent IPRA and Open Meetings Act (OMA) appellate decisions by The Rodey Law firm’s Charles “Kip” Purcell, cases currently pending in the court of appeals by Santa Fe attorney Daniel Yohalem, and ethics and transparency law with Albuquerque attorney Gregory Williams of Peifer, Hanson, Mullins, and Baker, P.A.
Tickets are available for $275 and can be purchased online by visiting www.nmfog.org. A limited number of discounted scholarship tickets are available for $100 for non-attorney attendees. The seminar also is a fundraiser for FOG, with proceeds supporting the organization’s work educating and advocating for openness in government.
