NMSP: Man Arrested In Santa Fe On Eight Criminal Counts Including Domestic Violence, Kidnapping And Battery

SANTA FE — New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers were dispatched June 20, 2024, to the Presbyterian Hospital at 4801 Beckner Road in Santa Fe, for a report of domestic violence and child abuse.

Officers learned that earlier that day, the adult female victim, her boyfriend Carlos Javier Apodaca, 21, and their 2-year-old daughter drove to Albuquerque to visit a family member. While in Albuquerque, Apodaca and the victim got into an argument. While driving Apodaca repeatedly hit the victim and held a box cutter to her neck and torso. Apodaca forced the victim and her daughter to stay in the vehicle while he drove back to Santa Fe.

The victim attempted to call 911 while in Albuquerque, but Apodaca prevented the victim from communicating with the police.

Once in Santa Fe, Apodaca struck the victim again, got out of the vehicle and walked away. At this time, the victim drove herself to Presbyterian Hospital where she was treated for her injuries. The child, who was physically unharmed, was taken to a family member’s house. An arrest warrant was issued for Apodaca.

June 21, 2024, NMSP officers located Apodaca at a Shell Gas Station at Airport Road and Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe. As officers approached Apodaca, he fled on foot, and after a short foot pursuit, Apodaca was taken into custody without incident.

He was booked into the Santa Fe County Detention Center and charged with:

  • Kidnapping (two counts);
  • Abuse of a child (1st offense);
  • Aggravated battery against a household member (deadly weapon);
  • Aggravated battery against a household member (great bodily harm);
  • Aggravated assault against a household member (deadly weapon);
  • False imprisonment (two counts);
  • Interference with communications (obstructing the sending of a message); and
  • Resisting, evading, and obstructing an officer (resisting).

This case is being investigated by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
