Op-Ed: Homage To Educators

By MARVIN BLAIR

As we approach the first week of school, we must pause and recognize the educators, assistants, custodians, and administrators who wholeheartedly dedicate themselves to caring for our children. While we go about our daily routines—it is work, errands, rest, or family responsibilities—they tirelessly nurture young minds. Teaching children gratitude and appreciation is a precious gift that transcends ethnicity, values, gender, and socioeconomic status. Although we often hear about combating racism, promoting justice, and ensuring equity, we sometimes overlook the importance of teaching inclusion and compassion from an early age. As adults, we do not fully grasp the profound impact these values can have.

The good news is that most teachers in our school districts—perhaps all—are committed to fostering inclusion and creating opportunities for our kids. A heartfelt thank-you letter can go a long way in expressing our gratitude. But let us take it a step further. How about encouraging our children to reach out to local representatives and advocate for increased salaries for educational assistants statewide? By doing so, we demonstrate our commitment to education and stand alongside educators across our state and nation.

Consider this: If we genuinely value education, it is time to turn words into action. We allocate a staggering $715 billion (about $2,200 per person in the US) for defense, but shouldn’t we prioritize our educators and their assistants? Educational assistants, who play a vital role in supporting, teaching, and advocating for our children, often earn less than $30,000 annually—a wage well below the poverty level. Let us walk the talk and allocate a portion of New Mexico’s Gross Receipts Tax (GRT) to raise their income. It is disheartening that fast food workers earn between $15-17 per hour while those who passionately care for and support our children receive less than $18.50.

Together, let us champion the cause of fair compensation for educational assistants and ensure their invaluable contributions are recognized and rewarded.
