Letter to the Editor: Beer Co-op Plans Brewery and Taproom

MICHELINE DEVAURS
President, Los Alamos Beer Cooperative
Los Alamos

In his March 7 letter to the editor, (“White Rock Needs a Pub”) Jon Hicks asks if there are any hopes for a local bar where patrons can enjoy a pint of beer and a quiet conversation without having to compete with big screen TVs and sportscasts blaring at full volume.

Well, I am happy to report that there is, in fact, a hope for just this sort of establishment in either White Rock or Los Alamos, or both.

But it is up to the citizens of Los Alamos County to help make the vision a reality.

The mission of the Los Alamos Beer Cooperative is to establish Read More

The Pain Free Athlete: Shin Splints Can Occur in Seasonal Transition

Shin Splints Can Occur in Seasonal Transition

Transitioning from skis to running shoes can be painful.

When skiing, our foot is connected to a long board and never makes contact with the ground. In running, the foot is free to move on its own and comes in direct contact with the earth.

How the foot interacts with this surface can make the difference between a pain full or pain less run.

The functional design of the foot is to strike the ground on the center of the heel, roll to mid-stance and push off over all fives toes.

How The Hen House Turns: Fire, Dog Crates and Straw

How The Hen House Turns
Fire, Dog Crates and Straw
By CARY NEEPER

Spring. The first crocus makes me remember to organize for possible evacuation.

During the Cerro Grande Fire in the year 2000, all we had to evacuate was a turtle, a plecostomas and two swordtail fish.

They didn’t like being evacuated, but at last I convinced them to stay in the largest salad bowl I could find – all but the male swordtail. I couldn’t catch him, and time was ticking away. A huge plume of black, orange and white smoke rose overhead.

It broke my heart to leave the male swordtail behind. We spent five anxious

Letter to the Editor: White Rock Needs a Pub

Jon Hicks
White Rock
In White Rock we can get booze at three different places: Smith’s, the gas stations and Bandelier Grill with a meal.

I wonder if White Rock is the only community in New Mexico that doesn’t support a local bar?

We need some where that we can have a beer (not a six pack) and quiet conversation without four largescreen tv screens blaring the latest game at maximum volume.

I wonder if there are any hopes? Read More

Tax Season

Another tax season is upon us and the countdown has started to April 15.

You should have received your W-2, 1099 and 1098 forms by now.

If you have not received these forms, you need to track them down because they should have been mailed by Jan. 31, 2013. You might have these documents electronically if you are signed up for electronic or online banking with your bank.

Many taxpayers wait until the last minute to collect and organize tax forms, tax -deductible donations and any other tax related forms. I used to be one of them and I would spend many evenings during Read More

Letter to the Editor: Frustrated With Transportation-Related Issues

R. Wayne Hardie
Los Alamos

I have lived in Los Alamos County (LAC) for 34 years and just completed a term as a member of LAC’s Transportation Board, so I have considerable interest in, and considerable frustration with, LAC transportation-related issues.

In my opinion, the current kerfuffle over the “N.M. 502-Trinity Drive Transportation Improvement Project” is the result of yet the latest in a long list of mismanaged LAC road and street projects over the past several years as summarized below:

1. Diamond Drive: LAC/Public Works proposed a multi-roundabout
