Straighten Then Strengthen Your Body

Lifting weights is a great way to increase strength. Unfortunately, it can also engrain postural disparities and movement compensations.

This reality has spawned the term, dysfunctional fitness,  whereby we are doing our bodies more harm than good in the weight room.

Real strength comes from a stable and aligned posture. Joints that are out of alignment are weak. The position of the joints is dictated by the muscles that are attached to them.

When our skeleton is in a symmetrical position, Read More

Comments on Television and Associated Media From a Lifelong Addict

Welcome to the first of an anticipated series of weekly columns about television and associated media.

The title is taken from one of the iconic music albums from the 1980’s, “Songs from the Big Chair” by Tears for Fears (1985) and it, of course, refers directly to my lounge chair in our (that’s Linda, my lovely bride, and me) living room here in White Rock (N.M.)

I am a lifelong lover of television, starting in the late 1950’s, and my love for television has run unabated since Read More

Letter to the Editor: ‘CIPs: Move Forward Responsibly’

By Pete Sheehey
Los Alamos County Councilor

It became clear in December 2012 that our net county tax revenues for fiscal year (FY) 2013 would be about $9 million less than initially projected.

We can make up half of that shortfall by economizing on county operations. The County has maintained reserves of 25 percent of yearly revenues, about $15 million, to deal with such problems.

So why not go ahead with our original spending plans, and just dip into reserves for the other half of the shortage? The answer is that this is potentially not a single-year budget problem.

Hannemann’s Music Corner
Column by RICHARD HANNEMANN

Working Without a Net

Being a solo guitarist, whether you are doing straight instrumentals or vocal with instrumental accompaniment, is a tough gig.

You have no music stand or music in front of you because the music is supposed to be fully memorized: if it isn’t memorized it isn’t ready for performance.

You have no one you are working with. You have no one to cover you if you make a mistake. You are alone on the stage. It is just you and the audience – people you do not know and who are staring at you hanging

By Dave Fox, Anne Fox and Andy Fox
Los Alamos

Dear County Councilors: With respect and sympathy for the needs of other applicants for new facilities, CB Fox wants to go on record as a supporter of the PEEC Nature Center.

Of all the prospective CIP candidates, the Nature Center, placed on Canyon Road, fits Los Alamos’s new Creative District, imparting to the District the non-stop thrum of life that PEEC has already abundantly demonstrated it not only can, but does in fact, deliver every week of the year, year after year.

PEEC’s vitality, transported to the Creative District, adjacent as it is to the Read More

Letter to the Editor: LACDC Should Hire Locally

Erik Swensen
ES Development Group

As you may already be aware, Mr. Kevin Holsapple of the Los Alamos Commerce Development Corporation (LACDC) is stepping down as the executive director.

His departure gives the LACDC board an opportunity to evaluate the needs of our community during these difficult economic times and gives Los Alamos the best opportunity to grow in a manner that reduces our dependence on LANL.

I am a 20-year resident of Los Alamos and recently started my own business after being caught in the aftermath of the CMRR project cancellation.

During my tenure, I’ve observed that both Read More
