Letter to the Editor: Call Municipal Building What it is!

By Christine Weaver
Los Alamos

I definitely agree with Ms. (Diana) Stepan. Why does Los Alamos feel they need to name every building after someone?

If that person didn’t personally finance the building just call it what it is!

Sooner or later the “honoree” is long forgotten thus Civic Auditorium, Aquatic Center, Municipal Building, etc., all make plenty of sense.

Letter to the Editor: Name Municipal Building ‘Citizens’ Municipal Building’

By Diana Stepan
Los Alamos

In my opinion, the new Municipal Building should be named the “Citizens’ Municipal Building,” since the citizens paid for it and the citizens are the ones who are supposed to be served by the employees who work at the Municipal Building.

If that is not acceptable, please simply name it the “Los Alamos Municipal Building.”

There is no one I can think of that deserves the honor except for the citizens of Los Alamos County. Read More

Letter to the Editor: ‘Max Baker Municipal Building’ Gets My Vote!

By JJ Maier
Los Alamos

I am hoping the committee will consider the concept of naming the new Municipal Building after (former County Administrator) Max Baker instead of Jeannette Wallace.

Max had so much more to do with our County’s administration if one reviews his record – during some of our roughest times – and he frequently was serving us as an “interim administrator.”

He gave us so much and asked so little in return.

Jeannette served the district of which we were always a part, but had little to do with the administration and running of internal LAC affairs.

I am delighted that UNM-LA is naming

Money IQ

“Save Yourself” and “Define Your Own Future”…

“The Mayan’s were wrong on the end of the world, it was just the end of their calendar” and “Congress and the President have additional issues to address regarding the government’s fiscal stability and looming debt ceiling issue.”

Since uncertainty is a fact, some things are certain, “Define your Own Future” … contribute to an Individual Retirement Account.

Column: Music, All Music, Any Music, Is Wonderful

Music, All Music, Any Music, Is Wonderful
Column by Richard Hanneman

When I was a kid growing up in Los Alamos in the 50’s and 60’s I listened to KRSN.

KRSN programming back then was a musical potpourri – the play-list included Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Frank Sinatra, the Kingston Trio, all of the top recording artists of the day played in no particular order.

Within any given hour during the day you would hear rock, country, folk, blues, jazz. In all likelihood you might well have heard a back-to-back presentation of, e.g., Puff the Magic Dragon, Boogie Woogie Bugler

Column: New Year Reflections

New Year Reflections
Column by Elena Yang

Happy New Year! 2013 will be awesome … because I intend to make it so, for myself; besides, is there any other way?!

A few years ago, I encountered a young and energetic woman in a “Photoshop” workshop who said, “Every year I take on a new hobby or activity.

So this year I decided to learn how to shoot [with camera] and make great pictures.” It resonated with me. It doesn’t have to be a grandiose undertaking, just something that isn’t in one’s usual repertoire.

Through a fabulous new friendship made early last year, I have begun to read a few poems. Read More
