Letter to the Editor: Second Amendment Thoughts
By William C. Mead I have been deeply saddened by the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., Nobody should have to endure such senseless violence. And Newtown is only one of a string of recent mass murders.
My views of gun ownership have become more definite. As a result, I have created a petition on the White House petitions site, “We the People” (WtP), displayed below. I hope you will carefully consider the issue. The rationale for my view is discussed on CNN at https:////ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-899792
I understand that many Americans do not agree with my viewpoint, perhaps Read More
Column: Looming REAL ID Act Deadline
Column by Stephanie Garcia RichardOver the past few weeks several community members have contacted me about the REAL ID Act and a looming Jan. 15 deadline.
The primary concern is that New Mexico is currently not in compliance with the REAL ID Act.
This means New Mexicans may not be able to use their drivers’ licenses to board commercial airlines after Jan. 15.
If this occurs, it could have alarming effects on our state and community. Public concern over this issue has been heightened by recent news stories and statements from public officials.

Letter to the Editor: Oh, What To Do …
By JJ MaierThis is a mental health crisis brought to the front by an horrific tragedy.
We must undo the damage done by the Reagan and subsequent administrations/congresses when they eliminated the mental health help/care we were providing to people in need.
Because this is such a complex and mea culpa issue, the media and many short-sighted folks will try to make it a gun issue, which is way simpler.
Take away all guns and mentally sick folks will use knives and rocks. Please, let’s get this runaway train on the right track at least. Thank You!
Money IQ: Small Business Loans

Small business loans are generally defined as those seeking credit of $1 million or less. Letter to the Editor: Message to Mother LANL
By Inez Ross
Los Alamos authorIt wasn’t only the downturn of the economy, the ease of Internet buying, nor the rise of e-books that caused the demise of our bookstore.Another straw was the high rents charged in this town for local businesses. We are a one-company town and at the mercy of building owners who can charge what LANL can pay for their own offices.Rents here should not be as high as in larger towns like Denver and Boulder. The subsidy money did not go to owners of small businesses here.
Mother LANL can keep her children on the Hill by furnishing rent free buildings
