Benson: Remember To Vote!

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

Have you voted yet?

If yes, thank you for voting your values to make your voice heard in how you want to be represented to continue the functioning of our representative democracy.

If no, then here’s some information to help the undecided voter, or the who-cares voter, understand the issues and choose the candidates and positions that reflect your values.

(By the way, if you don’t think an individual vote matters, then why are so many voter-suppression measures being initiated to prevent particular individuals from voting? Also, if you think our elections are fraudulent Read More

Op-Ed: Education And Enforcement, Not Bag Ban Will Address Litter Problem

By Española City Councilor Sam LeDoux
and
Rio Grande Foundation President Paul Gessing

The City of Española, at the behest of Mayor John Ramon Vigil, will soon consider adopting a ban on plastic bags like those used at grocery stores. While proponents of such bans typically support them on environmental grounds (cut down on plastic waste etc.) the Mayor seems to believe that banning plastic grocery bags will have a positive impact on the City’s litter problems.

According to the website Plastics Paradox, “A compilation of all of the statistically-based, scientific studies of litter in the U.S. Read More

Dannemann: Where Did The Yard Signs Go?

A few years ago I supported a certain candidate for City Council. I displayed her yard sign in my front yard. She won the election, and she told me three of my neighbors had told her they voted for her because they saw my sign.

This year I have not put out any yard signs. A yard sign left over from the last election is gathering dust in the garage. I have not been approached by volunteers from any campaign asking me to put up a sign or offering to give me one. I think there’s a trend.

I am seeing fewer yard signs this year than in previous elections. Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

Streamflows are dropping across Northern New Mexico as the effects of the heavy rain over a week ago start to wear off. The water may stay a little murky. Murky water is still fish able, just remember the fish are having trouble seeing just as you are.

Flies  should have a little flash or color to them. Spinners are a good choice as the fish can feel the vibration of the spinning blade.

The wild brown trout and brook trout are spawning this time of year. They will develop deeper colors and become more aggressive. The higher flows will keep their redds  Read More

By SHERRY ROBINSON

As news spread about a freak storm in Roswell that dumped nearly six inches of rain in as many hours, we worried about people and places. My husband was living in Roswell when I met him, and I’d visited many times.

Safe in a dry house, we were talking about this disaster when it occurred to us: We’re all vulnerable. Before, we could watch the news about fires and hurricanes, but if you don’t live in the mountains or on the coast, it’s a bit removed. The Roswell flood brings climate change to everyone’s front porch.

Fr. Glenn: Saints And Sinners

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Whew! Big couple of weeks coming up. Of course, all in the news is the coming election on Nov. 5. People have said that this is the most important election of our time, and that the partisanship is worse than ever. Well, maybe … but it seems we hear that every four years. But it is a civic duty—are responsibility of citizenship—to make each of our voices heard on election days. We may feel like we’re “a voice in the wilderness” in this third most populous country on earth, but as is said, each pebble helps make up the mountain.

With all the quadrennially-rampant vitriol, it’s a bit ironic Read More

Halloweens And Politicking Deal With Dark News Clips

Election day, November 5, is mighty few days away. The airwaves have long been filled with everything that can be said before the election. Portions of news have been spun every which way and then some. The time to do better has passed. A calmer topic is Halloween, which has had its own dark spells with the news.

The proximity of these two traditions—Halloween and election day—brings factors to consider. Halloween costumes and masks make for a sense of unreal. Masked wording and varied
