Op/Ed: What Is This Town Like?
In response to the recent Op/Ed on “Los Alamos Lab Culture For Outsiders” (link):
Back in the days when the settlers were moving to the West, a wise man stood on a hill outside a new Western town. As the settlers came from the East, the wise man was the first person they met before coming to the settlement. They asked eagerly what the people of the town were like.
He answered them with a question: “What were the people like in the town you just left?”
Some said, “The town we came from was wicked. The people were rude gossips who took advantage of innocent people. It was filled with Read More

Op/Ed: Los Alamos Lab Culture For Outsiders
By STEPHEN DEROSIER
Los Alamos
This transplanted guy has had it with Los Alamos.
Scenically, it’s a geological utopia. Honeycombed with breathtaking hiking trails. Indescribably beautiful. A nearly perfect climate. Snow accumulation? New Englanders—as well as northern tier states—would be laughing at us. Coloradans too. Northern New Mexico almost always gets a peck on the cheek while they take the full facial blow, winter after winter.
But. Talk about having effectively rushed a college fraternity row of houses for over seven years…
People on this Hilltop, by and large, are not friendly. Read More

Hampton: On Upcoming County Budget Hearings
Chair Derkacs and Councilors,
First of all, I want to thank our County staff for an excellent 2025-2026 Biennial Budget Package and Citizens Guide. I found them both informative and easy to use. In regards to capital improvements, I applaud the emphasis on maintenance of existing facilities and infrastructure. Performance measures for each department were very useful.
My main concern is the budget option to add a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) and Training Analyst. I strongly support implementing the Racial Equity and Inclusivity (REI) Task Force’s Read More

By REBECCA RUTHERFORD

For the Los Alamos Daily Post
On Friday, April 12 the FBI warned of a massive ongoing smishing scam themed towards unpaid road tolls.
What is smishing? Smishing is phishing via SMS – text message, as opposed to phishing, which is when they try to trick you into giving up sensitive information via email attack.
These attacks started in March and thousands of people have already reported the attacks.
“Since early-March 2024, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has received more than 2,000 complaints reporting smishing texts representing road Read More
Cinema Cindy Reviews: Civil War
By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos
Morbid curiosity … You could say that is what took this reviewer to see “Civil War,” which opened in theaters Friday and is now showing at SALA. “Morbid” because, in an election year, who really wants to imagine our nation warring against itself? “Curiosity” because the film’s trailers were decent, and because there are somewhat-encouraging numbers given it by IMDb (7.6/10) and Rotten Tomatoes (83%, with an audience score of 79%).
Fortunately, my concern wasn’t necessary. Writer-director Alex Garland intentionally left out any specific politics that would Read More
