Gessing: Land Commissioner Is Right – New Mexico Oil And Gas Boom Will Continue
By PAUL J. GESSING

Recently, Land Commissioner Stephanie Garcia Richard, after pushing the Legislature for a 25 percent tax hike on New Mexico oil and gas producers made the decision to pull those “highly valuable” tracts of land and not lease them. That decision has raised concerns that her actions may violate her fiduciary responsibility to maximize revenues from the lands under her control.
Garcia Richard told the Albuquerque Journal, “It’s worth it to temporarily forgo the dollars (from leasing immediately) to make billions more in the future by leasing Read More

On Indigenous Peoples Day 2020 in broad daylight, a mob of vandals tore down the 154-year-old Soldier’s Monument in the center of Santa Fe Plaza because it was offensive to some Native Americans. Now veterans groups are demanding it be restored.
The destruction followed months of controversy that was notable for its absence of historical fact. Nobody seemed to know the obelisk honored Union soldiers, many of them Hispanic, who died in New Mexico’s two Civil War battles. But there was plenty of vitriol directed at one word that’s been Read More
McDonough: Doing Something About State Of Education
By Patrick McDonough
Chairman
Excellent Schools New Mexico
A dear friend of mine has a standard question for his friends complaining about the state of education in New Mexico. He asks, “what are you going to do about it?”
Well, my wife Nella Domenici and I are doing something about it.
We believe this is the social justice issue of our time – the lack of educational preparedness that is systemic in underserved, and often ignored communities. We know, based on results being achieved nationally in underserved communities, and at our Excellent Schools New Mexico (ESNM) partner schools, that this Read More

Fr. Glenn: To Jerusalem
Dang. Though by no means a British royalty watcher, I sure hated to see that Princess Catherine has come down with cancer. She seems like such an elegant, classy and yet down-to-earth young woman. She’ll be a lovely queen one of these days if she can beat this disease. Prayers for her and ALL who come down with cancer, and for all who care for them. Me and the bros lost our dad that way, so been there, done that. And who among us who have been around for a while hasn’t watched friends and family battle that.
There was also a headline not long ago of Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania’s Read More

Earlier this month, Governor Lujan Grisham took a bold step toward creating a cleaner energy future for New Mexico by signing House Bill 41, Clean Transportation Fuel Standards, into law. Thanks to Governor Lujan Grisham’s support, New Mexico is now the fourth state in the nation to enact these fuel standards that promise to create both an environmentally and economically Read More

As a child, growing up in the Episcopal Church, I learned early on the significance of the week before Easter. My public school took a break that week, and my family would attend church more often than usual. After waving palm fronds and processing into the sanctuary on Palm Sunday, I could expect several more worship services later Read More
