Op-Ed: The Constitutional Promise … Why The Right To Counsel And A Day In Court Define Our Justice System

By CYNTHIA FRY
Retired Judge
New Mexico Court of Appeals

Deb Haaland’s campaign for Governor has chosen a troubling line of attack, often used against lawyers, criticizing Sam Bregman for representing people accused of crimes. It may be convenient politics, but it is fundamentally at odds with our Constitution and with the very principles that define our justice system. Our system accepts that both the government and the accused have attorneys. They battle it out in a courtroom and a jury decides guilt or innocence. This system protects all of us from government abuse.

By REBECCA RUTHERFORD

For the Los Alams Daily Post

You know that app you downloaded because it had a cute filter? The one that wanted access to your camera, your contacts, your location, and possibly your firstborn?

Yeah. The FBI noticed.

Last month, the bureau dropped a Public Service Announcement with a message for every smartphone user in America: some of your most popular apps may be quietly handing your personal data to the Chinese government. Yikes! Apps that maintain digital infrastructure in China are subject to that country’s national security laws – and those laws Read More

Ryti: FY2027 Budget Hearing And Other Engagement Opportunities

By RANDALL RYTI
Chair
Los Alamos County Council

The annual budget hearings are scheduled for April 27, 28, and 29. The proposed FY2027 budget for Los Alamos County reflects a necessary shift in fiscal strategy—one that acknowledges a new economic reality after several years of unusually strong revenue growth.

At its core, this budget is about stabilization. Gross Receipts Tax (GRT), which accounts for roughly three-quarters of the County’s General Fund revenue, has proven to be volatile. After peaking in the post-pandemic period, revenues declined sharply—down nearly 18% in FY2025, Read More

Weekly Fishing Report: April 13, 2026

By GEORGE MORSE
Sports and Outdoors
Los Alamos Daily Post

The Department stocked a total of 28,022 rainbow trout weighing 12,336 pounds. Most of the stocking will now be in Northern New Mexico.

It looks like there will be one of the weakest spring runoffs in memory this year. The snowpack is already disappearing, and the weather has been unseasonably warm and dry. This is reflected in streamflow measurements.

Several lakes in Northeast New Mexico opened for fishing. Morphy Lake State Park, Clayton Lake State Park, Charette Lakes and Maxwell Lake 13 opened after being closed for the winter. Read More

Home Country: An Old Man’s Prayer

Home Country
By SLIM RANDLES

When old Joe Gilliam began digging that hole in his front yard, out there close to the street, neighbors watched and wondered. When he got his grandson to help him carry the shade tree sapling from his pickup to the hole, people nodded.

Mystery solved. Old Joe’s planting a tree.

After removing the root mass from the five-gallon pot, the grandson disappeared and Old Joe was left to care for the baby tree. He carefully spread the tiny feeder roots out and tucked them in with soil. Then he packed more dirt around the tree’s base and soaked it well with the hose.

No one else saw anything Read More
