McQuiston: One Second In Time Could Last A Lifetime

By ALLEN MCQUISTON

With the start of the holiday season upon us, I thought I would remind the large number of people who will be driving to see friends and relatives, it only takes a second.

By now I believe 105 percent of the U.S. has a portable computer in their pocket that we still call a “phone,” even though no one actually talks on it anymore. What we do is tweet on X (formerlyTwitter), comment on Facebook, post on Instagram, send a Gmail, respond to a Text, read ESPN updates, make store purchases, and on and on.

The benefits of these devices are incredible. Read More

Skolnik: Staying Healthy During The Holidays

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
White Rock

All of us want to stay healthy over the holidays. Unfortunately, however, COVID has complicated our quest for good health. The quest is also complicated by the fact that COVID, RSV, and influenza are circulating at the same time.

It is also unfortunate that New Mexico has one of the highest rates in the US of new cases of influenza and the number of people infected by RSV nationally is rising. We have no data on local COVID infections. However, anecdotally, “everyone knows someone in Los Alamos with COVID.”

Given the above, there is an evidence-based set of practices Read More

Fellers: Feeding Wild Birds And Animals

By SALLY FELLERS
Los Alamos

I want to share my feelings regarding the county’s possible upcoming restrictions limiting our freedom to feed wild birds and animals on our own  property.

I recently read on the Mountain Lion Foundation website:

“On average, a lion will kill a deer about once a week. They also dine on coyotes, raccoons, rodents, elk, feral hogs, and even porcupines.”

Los Alamos has most of the seven animals mentioned! It’s preposterous to think that regulations limiting how we can feed wild birds, who scatter their food on the ground regardless of the feeding station used, will help Read More

Gessing: Reform Education To Boost Workforce, Economy

By PAUL GESSING
Rio Grande Foundation

The Legislative Finance Committee has produced a new report looking at the issue of New Mexico’s low workforce participation rate. Here is one of many choice quotes analyzing the problem:

While unemployment rates have recovered to pre-pandemic levels, the share of the state’s working age population participating in the labor force is persistently low. Social services, economic development, tax rates, pension systems, the service industry, and virtually every other area of the economy is impacted when there are fewer people working to support those Read More

Catch Of The Week: Norton Invoice Phishing Scams

By BECKY RUTHERFORD
For the Los Alamos Daily Post

An ongoing phishing scam is the fake Norton invoice scam … we’ve been seeing this for years, but it can still catch users. Norton is a company providing subscriptions for antivirus and privacy/security services like LifeLock.

In the scam a user receives an invoice via email from “Norton” or other companies, like the image below:

Looks pretty legit right? Remember, it’s easy to spoof any company’s branding in an email.

Weirdly the majority of these do not have links, they are simply an email with a PDF attachment.

The attachment usually will Read More

Letter To The Editor: Grateful For Return Of Route 2M Bus!

By TRISTAN VON REYN
Los Alamos

After a long time of waiting, the 2M bus is finally back in service!

This is very exciting news for people making the commute to and from White Rock regularly. Beforehand, one would have to wait for hours to get to their destination but now one can even get there possibly 40 minutes faster than on 2T!

This is especially important now that the weather is getting cooler, so people won’t have to wait out in the cold at the stops and at the transit center.

Thanks to ACT for bringing back the alternate route! Read More
