Denish: We All Depend On The Post Office

Not long ago, as I left the post office, I found myself humming a 1935 tune: “I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter.” I was there to purchase a roll of “forever” stamps, see what’s new with the specialty stamps, and mail a package.
I am an unapologetic fan of what I call “snail mail,” mail delivered by the post office. And I still love to write letters. Six days a week, I anticipate seeing what has come through my mail slot. Sometimes it’s catalogs and junk mail. The first of the month is utility, credit card and other bills. And monthly Read More
Fr. Glenn: Royal Virtue
Anyone of merit wants their children to grow up to be good and virtuous persons—intelligent without arrogance, strong but gracious and kind, beautiful without vanity, courageous to do what’s right, charitable to those in need, thoughtful, etc. Most parents, remembering their own faults and failures, weaknesses and regrets, long for their children to be improved (sometimes much improved) versions of themselves or of family members/mentors whom they themselves admire.
This is why many Christians celebrate various saints throughout the year: to provide examples not Read More
Tales Of Our Times: ‘Oppenheimer’ Movie Stirs A Mix Of Concerns In Differing Voices
Tales of our Times
By JOHN BARTLIT

People are a mixed bag. All told, we view big problems from different perspectives. Our priorities differ. Issues involve a range of concerns. Issues change forms when people exchange their kits of beliefs, in hopes that their beliefs alone will prevail.
But you never know. Turns of phrasing come along, partly by chance, which yield notably opposite results. So many turns have ways to make matters worse. Yet, the next turn might remedy a persistent problem.
My column a month ago cited two national issues that have gotten worse with time. You might remember Read More

In a recent column [Aug. 13, 2023], my colleague, friend, and sister in faith, Mother Lynn Finnegan, encouraged us to “examine our faith ‘comfort zones’” and, for those not currently part of a church, to consider giving it a try! And she offered a prayer that whatever church you enter might be “a source of healing and hope.”
I echo all of that! Church can absolutely be a source of healing and hope–healing Read More
Robinson: Virgin Galactic Shows World That Safety Is Everything In Adventure Tourism

When the Titan submersible imploded in June, killing its CEO and four passengers near the Titanic wreckage, I wondered if it would deal a blow to adventure tourism, namely Virgin Galactic and its flights from New Mexico’s Spaceport America.
It didn’t. Virgin’s VSS Unity flew on August 10 with its first three paying tourists and has many more lined up.
The difference in the two companies and their preparation is night and day. It’s a lesson to anybody who plans to shepherd tourists on risky excursions.

Pottery. Courtesy/Fr. Theophan

Over the past few weeks, I have been showing some people how to throw pottery, to form it on the pottery wheel. It is an ancient process, made much easier by electric motors and premixed, homogenized clay.
The hardest thing for beginners to get is centering the clay, getting the clay perfectly balanced in the middle of the spinning wheel. It takes experience and feel for pressing in on the clay while also pressing down, so that the clay has no other place to go than into the center of the wheel head. Read More
Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Barbie’
By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB

Get your pink on! Barbie has come to town. Greta Gerwig’s much-reviewed and highly rated film has been raking in ticket sales for a month, now, and it is finally showing in our town at SALA. Barbie is well worth your time. But be quick, as the film closes Thursday Aug. 31.
Across the nation and around many parts of the globe, people are coming to showings of Barbie dressed in pink or wearing outfits that Barbie might have worn. The first night at SALA, this was definitely the case in our audience. A party atmosphere pervaded the theater.
