By LAURA LEONARD

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a group of fatty acids that contain fewer than six carbon atoms and are produced by our resident intestinal bacteria (aka: our microbiome) as a byproduct of dietary fiber digestion. The most prominent SCFAs found in the gut are acetate, propionate and butyrate.
When it comes to maintaining optimal gut health, we often hear about the importance of a balanced diet, fiber intake and probiotics. However, we now know that SCFA’s might be the most important key to gut health and overall wellbeing. Foods like whole Read More

Communities cherish their local libraries. We count on them not only for books but for music, movies, access to computers and other services. We are so used to them that we often take them for granted.
But recently, libraries have become embroiled in the so-called culture war.
There’s no controversy about the small rural libraries throughout New Mexico. There are more than 50 such libraries, from Chama and Questa to Glenwood and Lordsburg, and including several pueblos. Many are located outside any municipality, with Read More

Dear Friends:
Recently, Senor Tortas closed its storefront at the American Legion Post 90 and now operates a food truck. Seeking Chameleon and Professional Skin Care Choices joined the long list of small business closures in Los Alamos, giving us even fewer choices for goods and services essential for our quality of life!

When looking back at our RV travels, I was reminded of a trip in 2019 to the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes. One of the highlights of that trip was driving the North Shore in Minnesota.
The North Shore Scenic Highway, Highway 61, begins at Duluth, Minn. and hugs the Lake Superior shoreline Read More
Fr. Glenn: The Common Lot
Fr: Glenn Jones:
One didn’t have to look long at the news this week to see the ongoing drama of five persons in the Titanic-tour submersible, now known to be lost with all onboard. The common speculation is that a hull failure facilitated an implosion of the vessel. The only consolation, if one is to be had for the families, is that it is surmised that the implosion, due to the great pressure on the hull as far down as it was, took a few milliseconds at most, and those unfortunates likely died without even being aware of their own disastrous demise.
The submersible tragedy was big news because of it being Read More

Useful ideas can fade out of sight among the nature of things. This theme has new proof in the case of goats and goat wranglers. Both got good press in recent months for their skilled work protecting Chilean forestland.
The threat was from wildfires around the city of Santa Juana in south-central Chile and the nearby Bosques de Chacay, which is a park noted for its good mountain biking. For some time, fires have been worsening there. In 2011, local farmers and landowners joined in a grassroots effort to fight back. They formed the Chilote Read More
