Housing: Thoroughness And Justified Review

By PHIL GURSKY
Los Alamos

I noticed a letter to the editor from Candidate Stradling saying, in letter to the editor I wrote several days ago (link), I was misstating his projections; then pivoting to a large amount of deflection about the impact of his housing proposal and its potential cost (link). An additional response is warranted.

No one argues a full spectrum community with commercial goods and services” isn’t desirable. That is not the question, it is how to accomplish it and at what balance with other community values and concerns.

I well am informed and experienced in the status of Los Alamos Read More

Retired Congressman Redmond Endorses Dry For Council

By BILL REDMOND
Retired Congressman
Los Alamos

Discernment, honesty and courage are three excellent reasons for Los Alamos voters to vote for Sharon Dry to represent them on the Los Alamos County Council.

Sharon has taken tremendous criticism for objecting to the current mil levy proposal for schools. I support her in that position. Here’s why.

As a parent and citizen I have chaired committees to raise the mil levy for schools. In Los Alamos I led the committee to raise taxes to extend Read More

McQuiston: Protecting Your Business From Cyber Threats

By ALLEN MCQUISTON
The Jemez Agency

Since many cybersecurity issues arise from the “human factor”, educating yourself is one of the best steps you can take to protect both your personal and business presence.

What are a few things you recommend people do to better protect themselves when it comes to cybersecurity?

Use a password manager. One of the biggest downfalls people have with their personal security is reusing passwords and using weak passwords. The rationale for doing this is usually that it’s hard to remember a bunch of unique or complicated passwords to a bunch of different accounts. Read More

Stradling: Panic? Sufficient Housing Is The Answer

By GARY STRADLING
Republican Candidate
Los Alamos County Council

Thank you to many, many county residents for your almost uniform agreement.

When I meet you at your homes, or in the park, at fairs, on parades, you agree that sufficient housing is the most critical issue for the county. You do not want Business as usual! Most of you already understand the concept of basic supply and demand economics. Genuinely affordable housing is impossible without sufficient supply.

What kind of community do we want? Most of you say to me: “A full-spectrum community with commercial shopping and services.” Read More

Gruninger: Reasons To Focus And What’s A Session Like?

By JACCI GRUNINGER, MS, C-IAYT
Los Alamos

Last week I shared with you about Inner Relationship Focusing or Focus Coaching. Focusing can be beneficial for almost any situation you are going through in your life or something that has happened in your past. It can be used to work through something or to explore issues or concerns you can’t seem to resolve.

Focus Coaching is a gentle somatic practice that allows you to connect to your body’s wisdom with non-judgemental awareness. It involves going inside to explore and inquire for answers that you may not find by thinking alone

Shin: Sirphey Lawsuit Demonstates Councilor Ryti & Hand’s Questionable Support For Small Businesses

By LISA SHIN
Los Alamos

Sirphey’s $5M lawsuit demonstrates yet another devastating casualty for our small business community, and in a rare and unprecedented manner, our local entrepreneur is fighting back.

So far, it’s not looking too good for the County. Separate from the $5M lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court, in the 1st Judicial District Court of Los Alamos, County attorneys were ordered to pay all legal fees to Sirphey’s attorneys, which could cost upwards of $30,000.

Sharon Dry, candidate for County Council, pointed out that, “The recent decision and supporting comments by Judge Lidyard Read More

Wildfire Reflections: Saturday, July 30, 2022

By NELLY MAUDE CASE
Los Alamos

Several people have done their best to help me find out whatever became of my pen pal, Helga Renate Mattes, but to no avail. That may mean, luckily, that she’s still alive, since they’ve located no death certificate.

If I could contact her, I would have so many questions. Did she ever go to college? Did she develop a career in finance or some other field? Did she ever travel or possibly even emigrate to the U.S. or Canada? How would she perceive the relative positive and negative aspects of life in Germany and the U.S. today? Did she ever marry and have a family?

Happily for Read More
