Chandler: Why I Don’t Like The Proposal For ADUs
I’m going to tell you why I don’t like the proposal for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) being considered by the P&Z Wednesday night and the Council in November. My reasons are my concern for the livability of Los Alamos neighborhoods, my disappointment that ADU’s are being hawked as the solution to the fabled “housing crisis” (ADU’s are not a solution and the “crisis” is returning to its decades-long “problem” status), and are based on sound legal principles.
ADU’s would be allowed in single-family and some multi-family neighborhoods in all of Barranca Mesa, Read More

Someone once asked me, “Did you wear all black before you became a priest?”
Yes. Yes, I did.
I grew up in the late eighties and early nineties. Some who know me better, might say that I never grew up at all. Elementary school, for me, took place in a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama in a small, private, Christian school (evangelical). My father was the headmaster; my mother, the librarian; and my grandmother was the lunch lady. My two brothers and I couldn’t Read More

Fr. Glenn: The Goodness Of Humility
Phones, phones. Everywhere phones. And the ubiquitous selfies—social media awash in selfies, videos of self, comments from self, etc. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, etc., etc. Pride, or bids for attention? Not all, of course, but likely some of both.
Pride is highlighted in a parable of Jesus, in which an arrogant religious leader takes “… up HIS position [in the Jerusalem Temple] and spoke this prayer to himself (!)” …O God… I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity …” How Jesus phrases the parable is interesting, framing the man as worshiping the self. “Aren’t Read More
DeVolder: Los Alamos Bus Service – Evenings & Weekends
I can understand when an infant cries they might want a bottle of milk. However, a little more homework (analysis) is needed when someone living in Los Alamos County submits a proposal for bus service on evenings and weekends.
A simple analysis is not beyond the capability of an average high school student. Of course, it is always easier to sit around and say “give me this and give me that.”
The following is a simple framework for analysis purposes.
Bus Service Description – A description of the requested bus service needs to address the capacity / size of the bus, potential Read More
All Shall Be Well: That To Which We Cling

(a.k.a. Cinema Cindy)
In his 1940 book “The Problem of Pain”, Clive Staples “C.S.” Lewis wrote:
If the first and lowest operation of pain shatters the illusion that all is well, the second shatters the illusion that what we have, whether good or bad in itself, is our own and enough for us. Everyone has noticed how hard it is to turn our thoughts to God when everything is going well with us. We ‘have all we want’ is a terrible saying when ‘all’ does not include God. We find God an interruption. As St Augustine says somewhere, ‘God wants to give us something, but cannot, because Read More
Shin: Where Candidates Stand On Nuisance Code Matters
The CDD and its contractor Dekker/Perich/Sabatini (DPS) have completed a final draft of the Chapter 18 nuisance code. You can read it here: https://www.lacchp18update.org/post/final-chapter-18-draft-available
Revisions have been made based on discussions and public comment. I understand the importance of home maintenance and the desire to improve our community’s aesthetics and property values. However, I am concerned about expanding the role of the government to micromanage our yards and weeds. I am worried about heavy-handed enforcement and nuisance Read More
