Big Turnaround In Fed’s Projected Path For Rates

By EUGENIO J. ALEMAN
Raymond James Chief Economist

The risks to our forecast and to the US economy increased considerably after the latest statement from the FOMC with its updated projections for the path of interest rates. As an example, the March 2022 projection for the federal funds rate for 2022 was 1.9%, which was still below what is currently called the ‘neutral’ level for the federal funds rate.

However, in this new projection, the FOMC estimates the “projected appropriate policy path” to be 3.4% for 2022, which is a highly restrictive level. Furthermore, for 2023, the path for the federal Read More

Skolnik: COVID Update – June 21, 2022 – Los Alamos County & COVID – What Is Missing?

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
Los Alamos

As I have done before, I would give Los Alamos County significant credit for its work in providing access to adult vaccines and to COVID testing.

I believe there are four reasons why our County has failed to act on important aspects of COVID in a pro-active, timely, coherent, and Read More

Inna Bohn, a Los Alamos Middle School teacher, came to Kiwanis June 14 to share a story that made the war in Ukraine suddenly personal for a roomful of Americans.

Bohn moved to the United States some time ago, leaving behind her aging parents, but hoping to build a new life for her family. By the time Russia invaded Ukraine, her father had died of COVID-19 and her mother, a 75-year-old cancer survivor with health issues was alone.

As time passed and the war drew closer, Read More

Fr. Glenn: Days To Celebrate

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Saw a great headline the other day: “Justice Sotomayor praises Clarence Thomas as a ‘friend’ who ‘cares deeply about the court.” While the Justice admitted that she and Justice Thomas disagree most among all the Justices about constitutional issues, she expressed admiration his concern for people nonetheless. Imbedded in that story was also: “Sotomayor and Thomas’ friendship is not unique among Supreme Court justices. The late Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia have often been held up as a triumph of friendship over partisan politics.” Hmmm … quite the lesson Read More

Last week’s column discussed how the power of our subconscious mind keeps us stuck in patterns of behavior which no longer serve us. This occurs because we only have so much space for working memory and conscious processes.

The rest is stored in files deep in our subconscious library. The key concept here is to remember that most of this database contains negative information from childhood events. These files vary in intensity from person to person but when something in the present triggers a stored file, the body Read More
