Posts From The Road: Maroon Bells … The Most Photographed Mountains In Colorado … Perhaps All Of North America

Before actual sunrise, photographers rush to set up their tripods and prepare for the morning photo shoot at the Maroon Bells near Aspen, Colo. Due to huge numbers of visitors, one should check with the Aspen Chamber of Commerce for the latest restrictions before visiting the area. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com

About two or three hours after sunrise, the September breezes ceased and the Maroon Bells reflected into Maroon Lake. The lake sits at about 9,600 feet while each of the Maroon Peaks are over 14,000 feet in elevation. This is what every visitor to the Maroon Bells hopes to see and Read More

Fr. Glenn: Making It Count

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

One of the things people often ask is whether there is reincarnation. Despite the popularization of the concept—notable in other religions especially—the Christian might note the passage that was in one of our weekly Mass readings for Nov. 7: “… it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment…” (Hebrews 9: ). We also read similarly in other scripture, such as: “Do not give your heart to sorrow; drive it away, remembering the end of life. Do not forget, there is no coming back…” (Sirach 38:20-21) Jesus Himself illustrates the finality of earthly life in Read More

Shankland: The Citizens Speak! Results On Ballot Integrity And Reel Deal Purchase

By REBECCA SHANKLAND
Co-president
League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters’ recent library display in the Step Up Gallery had two ballot boxes so that visitors could practice their voting skills.

After the exhibit closed, we counted the ballots and recorded the comments.

One ballot box asked “Does the United States grant its citizens equal access to the ballot box?”

The results?

*YES 18

*NO  86

Interestingly, the comments indicated that even the YES voters were worried: “Yes, but community barriers, not enough volunteers, and other circumstances limit some minority, impoverished, Read More

By Dr. Laura Whipple DC
Los Alamos

Insomnia is an issue that plagues many of us at some point in our lives. Symptoms of insomnia include trouble falling asleep, waking-up in the night and not feeling rested.

Using over the counter or prescription sleep aids long term is not good for your health. Many of these decrease our performance the next day and some are linked to an increased risk of dementia.

In addition, we develop a physiological tolerance to these aids which means we need higher doses to get the same result over time.

This is why having good sleep habits is the best way to guarantee quality sleep Read More

Jaurigue: Thanks And Appreciation For Support

By ANTONIO R. JAURIGUE
Newly Elected School Board Member

Following the results of our Regular Local Election this year, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the community that elected me.

What has historically been a relatively calm, or boring election, was anything but that this year. There were robust debates online, more Letters to the Editors than I could keep track of, but the community came together to offer support.

I want to send a heartfelt “Thank You” to everyone who supported me. Whether the support came in the form of a donation, time, kind words, or even tough questions, Read More

McQuiston: Distracted Driving Is A Big Problem

By ALLEN MCQUISTION

What Is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your Read More
