Daily Postcard: Sharp-Shinned Hawk At Overlook Park
Daily Postcard: This Sharp-shinned Hawk posed on a fence recently at Overlook Park in White Rock. It can be challenging to tell the difference between a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Cooper’s Hawk, but the prevailing view of the ‘authoritative sources’ is that this is a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Adults have red eyes and the yellow eyes on this hawk suggest it is a juvenile. According to All About Birds, Sharp-shinned Hawks are the smallest hawks in Canada and the US. Interestingly, females are generally about one-third larger than males, which is typical for hawks and owls but otherwise not common Read More

He who knows that he knows, doesn’t.
He who knows that he doesn’t know, does.
Variations of this bit of wisdom have been attributed to many wise elders from our past. The saying highlights a problem we all face: we are all biased. Until we can admit this to ourselves, we are subject to appear, speak, and act as fools.
One of the most troubling biases is what modern psychology calls negativity bias. Read More
