We all know that the pain of addiction, grief, and homelessness runs deeply within this community. We see the symptoms of decades of systems, structures, and neglect that is tearing families apart. We do not have to bring in outsiders to fill the Española Pathways Shelter because it is full with our sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, friends and community members who would otherwise be bereft.

Los Alamos And White Rock Senior Activity Centers To Close Tuesday Oct.28 For Staff Development

The Betty Ehart Senior Center in Los Alamos and the White Rock Senior Center will be closed Tuesday, Oct. 28, for Staff Development.

All regular activities and congregate meal services will be canceled for the day. The Senior Activity Centers will re-open Wednesday.

Supreme Court Allows Allegations Of Prior Term Misconduct To Be Considered In District Attorney Removal Case

COURT News:

The state Supreme Court issued an order on Friday allowing allegations of misconduct in a prior term of McKinley County District Attorney Bernadine Martin to be considered in proceedings to remove her from office. Bridge players at our October 20th game were introduced to the new Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) Executive Director Ramon Garcia. The Senior Centers and the bridge club have had a close relationship since the mid-1980s.

State Funds Clean Water Connections For PFAS-Exposed Curry County Families

CLOVIS — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has selected EPCOR to connect approximately 100 private well owners in rural Curry County to clean drinking water, protecting families exposed to toxic PFAS contamination from nearby Cannon Air Force Base.

The $12 million project, funded through a 2025 legislative appropriation, will extend EPCOR’s existing water system east of the base, where a four-mile contamination plume extends from use of PFAS-laden firefighting foams.

The Charette Lakes, Clayton Lake, Maxwell Lake 13, Morphy Lake and Laguna del Campo will close for the season Friday, Oct. 31.

Streamflow on the Rio Grande has been dropping now that the floodwaters from Southern Colorado have subsided. Stream flows just a week ago were over 1,000 cubic-feet-per-second at Taos Junction Bridge and at Embudo. Stream flows Sunday (Oct. 26) was 376 cubic-feet-per-second at Taos Junction and 461 at Embudo. The streamflow at Cerro near the Colorado border was 276 cubic-feet -per-second.

NMED: Toxic Algae Detected In Quemado Lake

CATRON COUNTY — The New Mexico Environment Department is warning visitors to avoid water contact at Quemado Lake after samples confirmed the presence of harmful algae and toxins.

Harmful algae blooms, or HABs, occur when certain algae grow excessively in water, posing potential health risks to people and animals. HABs can appear blue, bright green, brown or red and may resemble scum or floating grass clippings on the water’s surface. These blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.
