Having Bitten Off More Than I Planned…I don’t understand why people complain about the “shorter” period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It matters little to me since I don’t shop for stuff or go into all-out decorative mode. I like minimalism; a couple of bare branches (with lights and a few ornaments) and pretty lights in the front yard do just fine … when I get to them. Los Alamos athlete Garth Reader presented a talk Dec. 10 to the Rotary Club on his participation in the Marathon Des Sables Race across Sahara Desert. Reader finished the ultra race ninth in his division and 110 overall. The week-long, 156 mile race began April 7. He described a typical day as waking up with the sun, eating breakfast, packing equipment and picking up water rations. His tent would be knocked down as he made his way to the starting line for the day’s briefings. Agriculture Secretary Announces Electric System Funding
U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Friday more than $1.8 billion in funding for electric utility infrastructure projects in 25 states and one territory to improve service for more than 37,000 rural customers.
The projects include more than $45 million for smart grid technology, $73 million for renewable energy projects and over $213 million targeted to benefit Native Americans. This funding will build or improve more than 6,500 miles of line to deliver electricity to rural America.
