The Pajarito Astronomers will hold the final County-sponsored Dark Night of 2013 at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at Spirio Soccer Field in Overlook Park.
Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze. The planets Venus, Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus will be visible. There will be a tour of the autumn constellations, and there will be telescope views of double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

SANTA FE – The most recent class of high-growth companies honored with the Northern New Mexico 20/20 Campaign awards include:

The FBI is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a Shiprock, N.M., man wanted for the October 10, 2013, shooting of a woman at a housing complex on the Navajo Indian Reservation.
A federal arrest warrant charges Patrick Lynn Benally, 25, with assault resulting in serious bodily injury; assault with a dangerous weapon; use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of a violence; and offense in Indian Country.

Santa Fe National Forest Prescribed Burns Next Week
SFNF News:
SANTA FE—Starting Monday, Oct. 28, fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest plan to conduct several prescribed fires across the forest to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce overcrowding of vegetation.
Through hand ignition firefighters will burn slash piles and conduct broadcast burns (burning surface fuels in a mosaic pattern). The start dates and duration of the burns are subject to change depending on favorable burning conditions. Smoke could possibly settle into drainages and valley bottoms at night but should lift by mid-morning. Read More

School Board Hears Variety of Topics
The Los Alamos School Board got its first look at budget estimates for fiscal years 2015-2019 at a Board Work Session Thursday at Los Alamos Middle School. The figures were part of the Strategic Plan Report presented by Superintendent Gene Schmidt. Projections were made for declining student enrollment of two, three and five percent. This year, enrollment declined by nine students compared to this time last year. The Board will be looking at ways to address budget shortfalls in the coming weeks.

Melanie Boncella was one of the youngest Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) volunteers when she first became involved with PEEC around four years ago. Now she is 18, a senior at Los Alamos High School, and getting ready to go off to New Mexico Tech next fall to study some form of biology – ecology or perhaps genetics.
