After retiring as a theoretical physicist 15 years ago, Dr. Mei-Li Shih Milonni now finds beauty and expression in pottery.
Working at UNM-Los Alamos ceramics studio, she began creating her vibrantly colored and elegantly formed vessels about ten years ago. Sometimes whimsical, such as her ceramic handbag and shoes in bright green, and sometimes subtle with simple, functional forms and earth toned, graded glazes, Shih’s pottery is expressive of a gamut of creative impulse.

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health reported today that 331 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been reported in New Mexico in 2013.
“Pertussis is very contagious and can cause serious illness―especially in infants too young to be fully vaccinated,” said Department of Health Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent pertussis. The Department of Health recommends that pregnant women and anyone who is going to be around a baby make sure they are up to date on their pertussis vaccination.” Read More

By John Smith What is going on at the Los Alamos Police Department? I have read recent articles that state that officers are suing their own department for an “unsafe working environment.”
Now obviously our officers wouldn’t claim that the risk of being shot at, or the risk of being hit while in the roadway, or any other on the job hazard would be unusually unsafe – so what do they mean?

She and the suspect may be traveling to Ruidoso or Mescalero Indian Reservation in New Mexico.
The child is in danger due to the suspect’s propensity to drink and use drugs.

Treasury and IRS to Recognize Legal Same-Sex Marriages

PHOENIX – The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Thursday ruled that same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes.
The ruling applies regardless of whether the couple lives in a jurisdiction that recognizes same-sex marriage or a jurisdiction that does not recognize same-sex marriage.
The ruling implements federal tax aspects of the June 26 Supreme Court decision invalidating a key provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.

FBI, Navajo Police Ask for Public’s Help in Gallup Death Investigation

The FBI and Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety are investigating the death of a Navajo man from Arizona who was found lying in the weeds in a residential area on the Navajo Indian Reservation, in Gallup.
Vincent Smith Jr., 33, of St. Michael’s, Ariz., was found with apparent head injuries on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 on Old Zuni Drive.
He was unresponsive and lying on the ground near his blue and tan Ford F-150 truck.
Smith was transported to Gallup Indian Medical Center, where he died later that day.
