Camp Elliott Barker Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Open House

Girl Scouts — past or present — and community members are invited noon to 2 p.m. June 15 to Camp Elliott Barker to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the camp.

There will be a ribbon cutting, open house with tours of the property and cake. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. 

Ribbon cutting will take place at 12:15 p.m. at the new entrance off of Westridge Road  A second ribbon cutting will take place at 1 p.m. at Hoffman Hall to celebrate the newly renovated facilities and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the camp. Read More

Kids Can Experience the Four Elements at PEEC

PEEC News:

Beloved children’s librarian Melissa Mackey will teach four special classes at PEEC this summer for kids ages 8-12.

Elements will have sessions on earth, air, fire and water. The classes will be held the second and fourth Wednesdays of June and July from 2-3:30 p.m. and costs $8 or $6.50 for PEEC members.

June 12, the theme will be earth, and kids will get to build their own mud town! Mackey will help kids make mini adobe bricks, and will share stories and information about local mud-house building, both modern and ancient. Then kids can use their bricks to make a house or a whole town.

Attorney John W. Day of Egolf + Ferlic + Day, LLC has issued a response to a story that broke Friday in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
 
Day is representing Los Alamos Police Det. Brian Schamber in a $25 million demand against Los Alamos County.
 
This morning, Day addressed the legal action filed May 17 against his client in United States District Court by attorney’s for the Los Alamos County Council. That complaint requests that Schamber return to work as a police officer at the Los Alamos Police Department.

The Thompson Ridge Fire started May 31, 2013. It is located on the Valles Caldera National Preserve about two miles northeast of La Cueva.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez will be in attendance at a public meeting scheduled for the Thompson Ridge Fire at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, June 8. The meeting will be at the Fire Station in Sierra los Pinos, south of N.M. 4 on FR 10. The Arizona Central West Zone team will be present to give an update on the fire.

Last night, the audience was much larger and the stage was filled with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for the finals of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Cerro Grande Scholarships Awarded

LAPSF News:

This is the final year of the Cerro Grande Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to Los Alamos High School Seniors whose homes were a total loss in the 2000 fire and who are graduating in good standing from Los Alamos High School. 

The winners of this year’s awards were enrolled at Mountain Elementary School and were about to complete kindergarten at the time of the fire.

The sale of the book Cerro Grande Canyons of Fire, Spirit of Community has funded this award since 2001.

This year’s winners are Theresa Sandoval and Morgan Schake.

Taiji in the Park at Ashley Pond continues through the summer, weather permitting, three times a week, at 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, 8-9 a.m. Thursdays and 10-11 a.m. Saturdays.  

This program is free and open to the public. Instructor KokHeong McNaughton and some of her advanced Taiji students will take turn leading the practice sessions.

  • Pajarito Mountain Offers Fun Both Summer and Winter

Times have not been easy for Pajarito Mountain Ski Area. A string of mild winters caused low numbers of purchased season passes and shortened ski seasons and the Las Conchas Fire damaged two of the ski area’s chair lifts.

This rash of bad luck has not dampened enthusiasm for the ski area, however. It continues to be a community asset and everyone is encouraged to come out and see this local gem for themselves.

NM Delegation Introduces Bill to Protect Special-Ed Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Members of the New Mexico Congressional Delegation have introduced a bill to protect New Mexico’s future special education funding.

This week, the Department of Education ruled that New Mexico underfunded its share of the cost of educating students with special needs for the state fiscal year 2011. It determined New Mexico did not meet its financial obligations for special education spending by $34 million.
