Letter to the Editor: An Unhappy Marker of How Far We Have to Go

Equal Pay Day
(An unhappy marker of how far we have to go)

By Judy Prono and Natalie Markin
Co-Facilitators, AAUW-Los Alamos Branch

Today, Tuesday April 9, is Equal Pay Day. It marks how far into the year a woman must work to earn as much as a man earned in the previous year.

The day is an unhappy marker of how far we have to go before we close the gender wage gap. This gap hasn’t budged in nearly a decade, leaving women and their families to suffer the effects of lost wages.

2013: Equal Pay Remains Unequal

Staff report

Today is Equal Pay Day – a day held annually in April to signify the point into a year that a woman must work to earn what a man made the previous year.

An alternative to the wage gap, which is measuring the ratio between women’s and men’s median weekly earnings for full-time workers was 80.2 percent in 2009, which is flat since the historical high of 81.0 percent in 2005.

Letter to the Editor: Drilling Wells Disaster for White Rock

Robert Selden
Los Alamos

The plan to drill wells along the rim of White Rock Canyon is a disaster for residents of White Rock, La Senda and Pajarito Acres.

This project will bring industrial activity with visual and noise pollution into the residential areas, and degrade the quality of our lives.

The quiet and beauty of our hills, canyons and forests are one of the primary reasons many of us like to live here. This project as currently planned will damage open space areas along White Rock Canyon.

It will require service roads, construction, drilling and well operations, which will detract from the Read More
