NNSA Conducts Pollux Subcritical Experiment at Nevada National Security Site

LAS VEGAS – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced Friday that Pollux, a subcritical experiment, was successfully conducted Thursday at its Nevada National Security Site (NNSS.)

SFNF to Burn 3,500 Acres of Hazardous Fuels

SFNF News:

Fire managers plan to begin ignitions Tuesday, Dec. 11 within the Coyote Ranger District to treat hazardous fuels with prescribed fire.

The total acreage includes Mesa Camino and Gallina WUI prescribed burn project areas. Depending on conditions, either one or the other project area will be treated next week.

This is an ongoing project that began 10 years ago. Approximately 75 percent of the project has been completed in prior treatments.

New Microscopy Technique Gets Close Enough to See Lengths of Atomic Bonds

For the first time, scientists have used an imaging technique that’s so precise that it’s possible to see the different lengths of individual atomic bonds. Using a method called non-contact atomic force microscopy, IBM researchers scanned a microscopic probe with a tip only an atom wide over a nanographene molecule and measured the forces between the probe and the sample. Los Alamos School of Gymnastics Atomic Tumblers’ Brianna Fryer, Addison Richie and Anna Clark became New Mexico State All-around Champions in their divisions following their performances in the Xcel Program State Gymnastics Meet in Rio Rancho Dec. 1.

NMDOT Prepared for Arctic Blast

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is prepared for the arctic front that’s scheduled to hit New Mexico on Sunday. 

The biggest impact is expected to be seen in NMDOT District 4, headquartered in Las Vegas, which encompasses the northeast corner of the state.

Approximately 80 dump trucks with snowplows and salt and cinder spreaders in District 4 are loaded and ready to go. All patrol crews that could be impacted have been preparing for the storm, readying vehicles and receiving briefings on both weather and expected roadway conditions.

The public is invited to attend the official “swearing in” ceremony for newly elected officials at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 in the Municipal Courtroom of the Justice Center.

State and Federal Officials Reject N.M. 502 Plans

The New Mexico Department of Transportation, (NMDOT), and the Federal Highway Administration, (FHWA), in a letter dated Nov 30, have rejected the Los Alamos County’s proposed alternative for the N.M. 502 Improvement Project (see link to letter below.)

This means that the project will not receive the $3.8 million in funding that the NMDOT and FHWA have programmed for Fiscal Year 2014 unless new plans are drawn up that are acceptable to NMDOT and FHWA.

Bob Webster has been named Associate Director for Weapon Physics and John Benner has been named Associate Director for Weapon Engineering and Experiments at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Both have been in their positions at LANL as acting associate directors since March 2012.
