Firefighters Douse Small Brush and Debris Fire

At approximately 6:25 p.m. this evening, firefighters responded to a small brush fire behind the apartments at 3100 Trinity Dr., west of the Reel Deal Theater. Pine needles, a rug, notepaper and other debris were found burning at the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

On Saturday night, the Reel Deal Theater presented a free screening of the grassroots film Education is Hope. The film was produced locally and filmed in Kenya by Will O’Donnell and Dylan Westfall. The documentary film highlights the efforts of the International Peace Initiatives (IPI) to provide opportunities for children to attend school. Holger Waschinski of Pac8 edited the movie.

Los Alamos County Senior Planner Nancy Cerutti retired Friday following 22 years of service. ‘Autumn in Provence’ Tops $5,000 for Kiwanis Scholarships
Kiwanian First Vice President/Event Chair Karen Kendall welcomes nearly 100 people to Saturday night’s “Autumn in Provence” wine dinner fundraiser at the Dixie Girl Restaurant in downtown Los Alamos. The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos hosted the event, which raised $5,700, including $1,000 scholarship donation by Kurt Steinhaus on behalf of LANS, LLC and Director Charlie McMillan of Los Alamos National Laboratory. Kiwanis is the local service club with a focus on youth projects. Founded in January 1948, Kiwanis is the oldest service organization in Los Alamos. Read More

‘Flowers by Gillian’ Opens at KRSN
KRSN AM 1490 Station Co-owner Gillian Sutton designed all of the floral arrangements for the tables at the United Way Youth Team’s “Taste the Sky” fundraiser at Los Alamos County Airport earlier this month.
Sutton was a local florist for more than 15 years before buying the radio station in 2005.
She recently placed a large floral cooler in the KRSN studio at Diamond Drive and Arkansas Street and launched “Flowers by Gillian.”
Sutton now creates custom floral designs to order and delivers locally.

Glass Drop-off Recycling Program Starts Today

Starting Saturaday, Sept. 29, yellow collection dumpsters will be placed at Sullivan Field and the Overlook Park Convenience Center to accept glass bottles and jars of all colors for recycling.
Glass bottles and jars will also be accepted for recycling at the Eco Station. Yellow in-home collection containers are now available at the Eco Station.

Asteroid’s Troughs Suggest Stunted Planet
An image taken by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft on July 24, 2011, shows troughs along the equator of the asteroid Vesta, including Divalia Fossa, which is larger than the Grand Canyon. A new study analyzing these troughs finds that they are probably graben – a dip in the surface with faults on either side that would indicate that Vesta has characteristics much like a planet or large moon.
