Los Alamos National Laboratory physicist George Kyrala, along with researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), is among a team honored with the American Physical Society’s 2012 John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research.
The team is being recognized for its work on a far-reaching discovery about laser-matter interaction, which has important implications for LLNL’s National Ignition Facility (NIF.)

Census: Los Alamos Lacks Young Adults, Has Plenty of Middle-agers

The 2010 federal census shows that Los Alamos is lacking in its level of 20 to 34 year olds compared to the rest of the United States and has an abundance of 35 to 49 year olds and 50 to 64 year olds.
With a County population of 17,950 in 2010, Los Alamos was ranked against 3,141 counties and Independent Cities (IC) across the nation. (A higher ranking means a larger percentage of population in an age grouping.)

Great ideas are conjured up every day. Take Los Alamos residents Leanne Smith and her husband, David, who came up with a plan to bike from Portland, Maine to Portland, Ore. for charity.
As of Sunday, the two were pedaling on their tandem bicycle through Wisconsin. Their journey began Aug. 2 and is expected to cover 3,000 miles in eight weeks.

Chamisa Gets ‘All Clear’ Following LANL’s Technetium-99 Assessment Conducted Sunday

On short notice Sunday, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Department of Energy conducted a precautionary assessment of Chamisa Elementary School.
The sweep by DOE’s RAP team (Radiological Assistance Program) resulted in an “all clear.”
The assessment was the result of the Laboratory’s investigation of an inadvertent spread of Technetium-99 by employees and contractors at LANSCE as reported in the Los Alamos Daily Post Monday.

The Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce August FAN Club is set for 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29.
This is a great opportunity to see the site where the Los Alamos Visiting Nurses organization will be building Los Alamos’ first-ever hospice, and tour one of the more historic buildings in Los Alamos at the same time, in the former Scout Lodge, 2202 Canyon Road.

Downtown Without Power Monday

DPU News:
Los Alamos businesses on the south side of Trinity Drive from 20th Street to the end of DP Road were briefly without power yesterday morning.
Around 10 a.m. a contractor severed an underground electric line while removing a section of sidewalk.
Electric line crews with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities responded and rerouted power around the damaged section to restore power in less than 30 minutes.

The recent rains have brought a wealth of wildflowers to the Pajarito Plateau including the Quemazon Nature Trail, where I hiked recently.
Quemazon, which is a local Spanish word for “burned”, is indeed that. The entire mountainside was consumed with crown fire in the Cerro Grande Wildfire 12 years ago.
The nature trail was completely restored in the years after the fire by more than 250 Mountain School students and reopened by the County in 2004.

LANL Emergency Exercise Planned For Wednesday
LANL News:
Los Alamos National Laboratory is conducting an emergency preparedness exercise on Wednesday, Aug. 29. It is an exercise only.
LANL routinely conducts emergency exercises to test the preparedness of emergency response and other LANL personnel who would respond to an actual emergency.
The majority of the exercise is on LANL property and shouldn’t affect the public. Signs will be in place outside the Los Alamos Medical Center, alerting the public that an exercise is under way.

In memory of Cheri Host, Kathy Aikin and Emmy Hopson, the community is invited at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1 to tie teal ribbons to the trees at Ashley Pond.
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Saturday’s event is being held to raise awareness and not lose any more women in the community to the disease.
