Celebrate The Holidays Sustainably With PEEC!

PEEC News:

This year, staff members and volunteers at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) want to help the community celebrate the holidays in sustainable style.

In honor of Los Alamos WinterFest’s “Home for the Holidays” theme, PEEC is releasing a series of short videos this week with tips on staying green over the holiday season and beyond.

Topics include sustainable wrapping paper and decorations, reducing food waste, saving energy and reducing, reusing and recycling with your dog.

PEEC has collaborated with Zero Waste Los Alamos to produce some of these videos, too. Check this page daily to find the latest videos from this project.

In addition to the tips and tricks that PEEC is releasing, PEEC staff members Kristen O’Hara and Elizabeth Watts will go live via Zoom at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, to discuss some things to do to be sustainable over the holidays at a live Q & A. Bring questions and tune in for this discussion.

Along with PEEC’s sustainable holidays content, astronomer Paul Arendt will host a December Night Sky talk at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4 alongside Starr Woods from Valles Caldera National Preserve. Arendt and Woods will discuss what will be visible in the night sky during December, including constellations, the great 2020 Jupiter-Saturn conjunction and the Geminid and Ursid meteor showers. This talk is perfect for beginning stargazers who want to learn more.

In keeping with the WinterFest theme, the show will end with short presentations on gift options for telescopes and binoculars with which to explore the skies while home for the holidays.

Registration for both live programs is required to get the Zoom meeting link and password. Visit  peecnature.org/events to find out more and sign up.
