Pets Of The Week: Allegra & Allegro, Butterfly

Some miracles barely weigh more than their whiskers, yet carry an extraordinary will to live. At just one week old, Allegra was explicably found alone in the middle of a highway. Cars were speeding past at 65+ mph when a Good Samaritan saw her and pulled over—one vehicle even passed directly over her before he could reach her. She had been thrown between lanes and left severely injured, covered in abrasions and in shock.

Allegra’s condition was critical. No one knew if she would survive the night. But she held on. She spent her earliest weeks in an incubator under round-the-clock foster care—on antibiotics, fluids, wound care, and bottle feedings, even accompanying her foster mom to work while she continued her fragile recovery.

The trauma left lasting effects: vision impairment in one eye, weakness in her hind legs, and missing toes and claws. But what she lost in the accident, she gained back in love and resilience. That healing truly took shape when she met Allegro, a gray kitten with a broken tail and a gentle spirit. He became her constant companion—her playmate, comfort, and confidence. Together, they learned how to be kittens again. Now the two are inseparable. Their bond is the heart of their healing, and our hope is that they will find a home together—because they didn’t just survive together, they learned how to live together. Apply on our website! As the curtain rises on the Santa Fe Opera’s 2026 season, Española Humane is once again celebrating by naming pets after the stars of this summer’s productions. Butterfly is named for the opera’s opening night: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Fittingly, she even has delicate little “wings” around her eyes. Like her namesake, Butterfly has a remarkable story. She survived parvovirus thanks to our dedicated medical team and loving foster family, and now she’s ready for the happiest final act of all: a forever home.

Could this little opera star take center stage in your family? Apply to adopt Butterfly today and we’ll arrange your backstage pass to meet her at our Ojo Santa Fe Puppy Patch.
