Poeh Cultural Center News:
Pueblo of Pojoaque — Poeh Cultural Center announces that it has been selected by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive an award of $30,000 to fund traditional arts classes for Indigenous people at the Poeh.
The grant, which was awarded under the NEA Folk and Traditional Arts Projects, is one of 958 Arts projects, totaling $27.1 million, the NEA will support for the first round of fiscal year 2024 projects.
“The NEA is delighted to announce this grant to the Poeh Cultural Center, which is helping contribute to the strength and well-being of the arts sector and local community,” NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson said, PhD. “We are pleased to be able to support this community and help create an environment where all people have the opportunity to live artful lives.”
“With this grant, we can continue Pueblo traditions of teaching the fine arts of weaving, embroidering, pottery, and jewelry. Just as our ancestors have done before us,” Cultural Arts Specialist Cris A. Velarde said. “Teaching is part of our ways of life, whether it be language, songs or cultural arts. Right now, we are preparing for our spring semester classes and looking forward to seeing all the beautiful work being created.”
The Poeh Cultural Center, under the care of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, provides museum exhibitions, community programming, and hosts annual Indigenous Art Markets. In addition, for 35 years the Poeh has been providing art and cultural classes to Indigenous people in Northern New Mexico.
Registration will open for spring art and cultural classes at the Poeh Cultural Center starting February 2024. Three new classes will be introduced and consist of drum making, red-willow basket making, and Pueblo embroidery.
