Barranca Principal Davine Jones
LAPS News:
Principal Davine Jones has spent just over six months at the helm of Barranca Mesa Elementary School and so far, it is “everything I thought it would be and more,” she said. “I love Los Alamos!”
Jones moved to Los Alamos from California where she had many years of experience as a teacher, principal, and district leader. When asked about her first semester as a Barranca Bobcat, she said, “No matter the obstacles in the way, COVID, remote instruction, inclement weather, loss of power, etc., our Bobcats demonstrate Barranca’s core values of kindness, support and integrity.”
Some of the highlights include:
- Student Council and Choir honoring local Veterans at a Veteran’s Day Assembly
- Huge turn out for the PTO sponsored Trick or Trot
- Four Spelling Bee Winners
- Students going out of their way to show Kindness for the Great Kindness Challenge
- Barranca demonstrating integrity at the Middle School orientation
- Bobcats preparing Valentines for local seniors
- Implementing Tier 1 Counseling Based program – Second Step
- Launching 100 Mile Club to demonstrate goal setting and achieving a personal best
- Making growth in the ELA and Math IMMSA scores
- Launching the Reading Intervention program – Parallel Universe
“This semester we plan to continue our 100 Mile Club to demonstrate goal setting and achieving our personal best,” Jones said. “We also won a grant for our Character Traits program, The Pyramid of Success, so we will push that initiative forward as well.”
In addition, the PTO will be hosting a Bobcat Bonanza.
Attracting and retaining staff has been challenging, but Jones does appreciate the work of the Barranca staff.
What is her favorite thing about Barranca and Los Alamos Public Schools?
“The people,” she said. “Everyone is so kind and supportive.”
