SANTA FE — The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) Nominating Committee is seeking applicants to serve on the next term of the Commission, which will transition from an elected body to an appointed panel beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

The Nominating Committee is a standing committee consisting of seven appointed members tasked with evaluating candidates to fill vacancies on the Commission. After reviewing resumes and cover letters, the Committee will narrow down the list of Commissioner applicants to those who best meet the qualifications for the position.
In November, the Committee will begin interviewing selected applicants and recommend at least five of them to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The governor will then appoint three of them to serve on the new Commission, provided they are approved by the state Senate.
The Commission is both the governing body for the PRC as well as a policy and regulatory body. The Commission’s duties include setting rates, creating policy that implements statutory mandates and policy goals, and enforcing rules and regulations governing regulated entities. A principal function of the Commission is to adjudicate cases involving regulated entities.
In 2020, a constitutional amendment was adopted by the state Legislature and approved by New Mexico voters to change the makeup of the Commission from a five-member elected body to a three-member governor-appointed panel starting in January 2023.

The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC) regulates the utilities, telecommunications, and motor carrier industries to ensure fair and reasonable rates, and to assure reasonable and adequate services to the public as provided by law. The NMPRC also promotes public safety through the offices of Pipeline Safety Bureau and Transportation Division.
