Prescribed Burn Begins Today

A 144-acre prescribed burn is planned in the Santa Fe National Forest, Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District beginning today if conditions are favorable.

Fire managers plan to treat 50 to 100 acres per day within a two day period.

The name of the project is the Southwest Barbero prescribed burn.

The treatment is expected to take place 12 miles south of the Rowe/Glorieta Mesa near Forest Road 124, and 12 miles south of Pecos.

Treatment will be by hand ignitions.

Chimayo Fire Update

New Mexico State Forestry Division spokesperson Dan Ware said that while there are no active flames in the Chimayo Fire, an evacuation order remains in place as a precaution for Chimayo and the surrounding communities because flames could flare up overnight.

Should that happen, evacuees are advised to go to the Espanola Stroke and Rehabilitation Center at 735 Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Park Road.

Fire Burning Near Chimayo is Threatening 100 Homes

About 50 firefighters are battling a 20-acre brush fire burning near N.M. 76 close to Chimayo.

“I don’t know specifically if the Sancuario is threatened but if it is, we’ll have structure protection in place,” said spokesman Dan Ware of the New Mexico State Forestry Division. “About 45 minutes ago (7:30 p.m.) crews were getting a handle on the fire – it’s not contained by any means – but they are starting to get it under control.”

DOD Selects Los Alamos Police Department for Recognition as a ‘Patriotic Employer’

The Los Alamos Police Department has been selected by the Department of Defense as a “Patriotic Employer.”

The chair of the local Employer Support for the Guard & Reserve will present the award to the local police during Tuesday’s County Council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.

ESGR is a Department of Defense sponsored program to help guard and reserve members and to honor employers who do the same.
