UNM-LA News:
Spring classes at the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) will begin Jan. 16. Registration is open through Jan. 26, but earlier registration is advised as classes have seating limits.
With a high number of faculty holding a Ph.D in their teaching fields, UNM-LA provides an exceptional quality of instruction. Small class size allows for personal attention that is critical for student learning and success. The student support in advising and career exploration is vibrant and personal.
“There is no better value in New Mexico, and families can feel comfortable knowing that they’ve made a good investment,” said UNM-LA Student Enrollment Director Kathryn Vigil. “Compared to the two larger Universities in New Mexico, the savings at UNM-LA can be viewed as a 45 percent discount. Money can also be saved in rent, food and transportation for students who choose to live at home for a year or two.”
In addition to traditional face to face classes, UNM-LA offers online and hybrid classes (a combination of face-to- face and online) to help meet the various scheduling preferences and learning styles of students. There also are a variety of short courses, including classes that will start later in the semester.
UNM-LA is now offering an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Public Safety, with two online classes available this spring. Intro to Homeland Security (PBST101) introduces students to historical and contemporary aspects of governmental action related to terrorism and disaster, and discusses the challenges in balancing security and freedom. Public Safety Interview and Report Writing (PBST109) introduces students to effective interview techniques for gathering pertinent information, and narrative report writing for working within the justice system.
“We’re excited to welcome Matt Cosby as the program coordinator of the new Public Safety AAS degree,” said Division Chair Barbara Yarnell of Business, Fine Arts and Applied Sciences. “He has an extensive background in police work and drug enforcement, and will be able to share stories of real life situations as they apply to the course material.”
UNM-LA offers academic classes and programs in a variety of subjects to help students who are interested in increasing their knowledge, improving their skills, entering the workforce or transferring to four-year degree programs.
Those wishing to enroll can do so either online or on the UNM-LA campus. For questions or more information about enrollment, contact UNM-LA Student Services at 505.662.5919 or visit losalamos.unm.edu.
UNM-Los Alamos is an innovative, rigorous, and affordable comprehensive branch community college that provides foundations for transfer, leading-edge career programs, and lifelong learning opportunities.
