Congressional News:

SANTA TERESA U.S. Rep. Gabe Vasquez (NM-02) hosted a press conference Feb. 14 with U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar at the Santa Teresa border crossing. In his speech, Vasquez discussed the importance of bolstering international trade between the United States and Mexico in order to strengthen the economies of our border communities.

Rep. Vasquez’s notable personal experiences at the border will inform his first year in office and provide invaluable perspective in Washington, D.C.

“International trade between the US and Mexico is essential for economic growth and prosperity in both countries,” Vasquez said. “It supports jobs, businesses, and entire communities on the border. That is why it is so vital that we support federal investments that enhance international trade and bolster economic development throughout the border region.

“For much of my career, I have worked on all sides of this issue and have seen firsthand how it affects New Mexico. From the 559 program to the pre-inspection pilot at Santa Teresa, I’ve had a hand in helping support our border economy. We must continue to fight to diversify our state’s economy and promote international trade. I am committed to ensuring our state continues to tap into the true potential of our vibrant and growing border region.

“I look forward to working with every stakeholder to identify our shared priorities and needs so that I can work in Congress to bring the investment we need and find common-sense solutions on both sides of the aisle.”

Ambassador Salazar shared the same interest in supporting Santa Teresa, adding, “We have to invest in the technology that is so important for a 21st century border, to create a modern, secure, and efficient border that allows the great commerce coming back and forth from Mexico to the United States, from the United States to Mexico, as we see it right here in Santa Teresa.”
