SF Animal Shelter Updates Operations Due To Pandemic

SFAS News:

Until further notice, to ensure the health and safety of shelter employees, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter will limit many of its programs effectively immediately.

Adoptions will be open to the public 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Adoptions will be closed to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Behavior and Training classes, as well as behavior house visits will be suspended. The Cat North & South, the shelter’s resale stores, are closed to the public until further notice.

“We are currently caring for over 150 animals, and we must take this step to reduce the risk of not having adequate staff to care for them,” Public Relations Officer Murad Kirdar said.

The shelter will continue to take in stray animals and allow guardians to reclaim their pets. The Admissions Department as well as Thaw Animal Hospital will maintain normal operating hours to ensure the public’s needs are met.

“We are asking people that need to surrender an animal to call us first at 505.983.4309 extension 1606, so we can prioritize the animals coming in,” Kirdar said. “At this time, we will only take in emergency surrenders to ensure space for a potential overflow of animals in the coming weeks.”

The privately-owned shelter will be offering dog and cat food to people that are struggling to feed their pets. Pet food will be available at the main campus, while supplies last, at 100 Caja Del Rio Road in Santa Fe.

“We hope by providing food to families in need, during this pandemic, we can keep animals in their homes,” Kirdar said.

Community supporters who would like to donate and help support the shelter can do so by visiting SFhumaneSociety.org, or dropping off donations at the shelter.

“This pandemic is going to hurt us, especially financially,” Kirdar said. “If you can donate, please do so now, so we can continue to help save the injured, neglected and homeless animals of New Mexico.”

Donations can be made at SFHumaneSociety.org.
