Santa Fe Pro Musica News:

SANTA FE – Two weekends, two concerts, two world-class ensembles! Santa Fe Pro Musica continues its String Works Series in February with back-to-back concert weekends.

The Castalian String Quartet and Cuarteto Casals will perform classics of the string quartet repertoire in St. Francis Auditorium.

The Castalian String Quartet will perform works of Mozart, Janáček, and Schubert Sunday, Feb. 13, and Cuarteto Casals will perform works of Haydn, Beethoven, and Shostakovich Saturday, Feb. 19.

Castalian String Quartet will be presenting a lecture and demonstration Feb. 13 that is free and open to the public (masks and proof of vaccination required). Following the afternoon’s concert, audience members can join members of the Castalian String Quartet for an Artist Dinner at Santacafé (reservations through the Pro Musica box office required).

About the Castalian String Quartet:

In the decade since its formation, the London-based Castalian Quartet has distinguished itself as one of the most dynamic, sophisticated young string quartets performing today. Named the inaugural Hans Keller String Quartet in Residence at the Oxford University Faculty of Music in 2021, they also are the recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s 2019 Young Artists Award, the prestigious inaugural Merito String Quartet Award and Valentin Erben Prize in 2018, a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship Award, and is gaining international acclaim as they take their talents abroad.

The Quartet derives their name from the Castalian Spring in the ancient city of Delphi. According to Greek mythology, the nymph Castalia transformed herself into a fountain and created a source of poetic inspiration for all who drink from her waters.

About Cuarteto Casals:

Cuarteto Casals is based in Barcelona where they are quartet-inresidence at the Escola Superior de Musica. Since their inception in 1997 at the Escuela Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain, they have received first prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition (London) and the Johannes Brahms Competition (Hamburg).

A prize from the Borletti-Buitoni Trust enabled them to acquire a collection of baroque and classical period bows which gives the group “a sonic signature entirely its own” (The New York Times). They have presented concerts in most of the world’s great concert halls and have created an extensive discography. The ensemble is named for famed Spanish-born cellist Pablo Casals.
