State Auditor Brian Colón
STATE News:
ALBUQUERQUE — State Auditor Brian Colón, through the Office of the State Auditor (OSA), issued a Risk Advisory, together with General Services Division (GSD), to alert New Mexico’s school districts and other governmental entities of risks related to the management of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) funds, specifically Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER).
The OSA advises careful review of the CARES Act and ESSER Fund requirements in developing internal controls, aiding in the prevention and detection of risks that may lead to waste, fraud, and abuse.
“We must protect New Mexico’s students, taxpayers and resources,” Auditor Colón said. “The CARES Act Funds are vital to the planning and instruction in the coming school year to ensure the safety of all our students.”
The OSA and GSD, through the Risk Advisory, provided guidance and resources for all governmental entities for procurements related to COVID-19. This includes guidance for CARES Act and ESSER funds.
“We want to provide as much information and guidance to aid in the proper prevention and detection of risks that may lead to waste, fraud, and abuse,” Auditor Colón said.
“GSD through State purchasing is ready to assist agencies by soliciting and procuring agreements for governmental agencies,” Sec. Ortiz said.
