PEEC News:
Geologist Elaine Jacobs will lead hikers 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 along the south rim of Pueblo Canyon. This free outing is made possible thanks to the Sierra Club and Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).
This afternoon guided walk will start at East Park, follow the paved trail along the canyon rim, and continue along the unpaved portion of trail to the Los Alamos Airport Terminal. Along the way, the group will explore volcanism and landscape evolution in the Jemez Volcanic Field. By observing the landscape, participants will be able to glimpse what was happening on the Pajarito Plateau between two catastrophic super volcano eruptions.
Walkers will meet at 12:30 p.m. at East Park . Participants need to bring water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, good hiking shoes or boots, and weather-appropriate clothing, layers are recommended. All are welcome to join. Feel free to drop in or leave early as needed. The first half of this hike is on a paved path and wheelchair/stroller accessible.
Jacobs is a Los Alamos native and was initially drawn in by the beauty of the deposits between the upper and lower units of the Bandelier Tuff. She went on to study these deposits where they are exposed in the northern canyons of Bandelier National Monument as part of her Master’s thesis. She continues to enjoy using “geologizing” as an excuse for a hike.
This free hike is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Sierra Club. Registration is encouraged, but not required. To register or learn more information about this and other PEEC programs, visit www.peecnature.org, email programs@peecnature.org or call 505.662.0460.
