Smith’s Food & Drug Store in Smith’s Marketplace in Los Alamos confirmed this morning that the chain has resumed accepting Visa® credit cards.

“Effective today we are accepting Visa credit cards again,” Store Manager Isaac Chavez said.

The Los Alamos and White Rock stores also accept Mastercard, American Express, Discover and all debit and HSA cards.

Smith’s stopped accepting Visa credit cards in April citing the high interchange and network fees Visa was charging. According to a news release at the time, Smith’s explained that Visa was charging the highest such fees out of any of the credit cards the stores accept. Apparently that issue has been resolved.

Smith’s Food and Drug was founded in 1911 in Brigham City, Utah by Lorenzo J. Smith. Now a subsidiary of Kroger, it is a prominent regional supermarket chain with more than 20,000 employees across in the Southwest and Northwest.
