This year’s beneficiaries are two Navajo organizations: Nihitaa’ Binaanish and Chinle Planting Hope. On Oct. 31, 1517, theology professor Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany. The first thesis stated, “When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent’ (Matthew 4:17), he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” Luther said such repentance does not refer to the Roman Catholic sacrament of penance, but to inner repentance that produces outward obedience. Over the past few weeks, I have been showing some people how to throw pottery, to form it on the pottery wheel. It is an ancient process, made much easier by electric motors and premixed, homogenized clay.
The hardest thing for beginners to get is centering the clay, getting the clay perfectly balanced in the middle of the spinning wheel. It takes experience and feel for pressing in on the clay while also pressing down, so that the clay has no other place to go than into the center of the wheel head. Read More
