Fr. Glenn: Risky Bets And Consequences

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Well, the fires are still raging through New Mexico and California, to utter ruination and scouring of much of the land and property. One is reminded of scripture: “How great a forest is set ablaze by a small fire!” (James 3:5) With nature’s resilience the land will recover in time, of course, but few of us will likely live long enough to see it back in its recent beauty and glory. Nonetheless, the ravaging of livelihoods, hearths and homes will leave scars for generations.

So, what has caused these recent tragedies which have affected the lives of so many so drastically? Cigarettes Read More

Fr. Glenn: Mother, O Mother

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Anyone who has been stationed on a Navy ship knows that the call that goes over the ship’s loudspeakers that gets everyone’s immediate attention, and adrenaline boost, is:

“Fire! Fire! Fire!”

…because there’s nowhere to run should fire get out of control. Should the worst happen, you’re facing ditching into the drink, uncertain safety in a lifeboat, or even a very unexpected and proximate termination of your mortality. Thus, ALL ship’s company are required to be trained in shipboard firefighting, because if necessary, it’s “all hands on deck” to save the ship. She is their Read More

Fr. Glenn: Confronting Imperfection

By Fr. Glen Jones:

Saw a cute joke in a magazine the other day: “A celebrity is someone who works hard their entire life to become famous and then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized.”

We do tend to love notoriety and attention … or at least think we do. But often becomes too much, and the notables again seek refuge in blissful anonymity. Many of us older folks remember the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana—she glowing and admired by millions. And yet, after many ups and downs in her life, Diana ended up dying while fleeing the spotlight. And as any celebrity finds all too soon, one thing people Read More

Fr. Glenn: Offering Self

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

Well, spring has definitely arrived. After a very dry winter, we here in New Mexico are currently having to watch—and some, to endure—wildfires voraciously devouring forests and grasslands, houses and buildings…like a sci-fi Godzilla having spewed tongues of fire across the land.

From a news report: “[This grandmother] was frantically gathering what she could Friday afternoon when an officer pulled into her driveway…and told her it was time to leave. Ashes fell from the sky and smoke whirled on gusty winds as she grabbed pictures off the walls — whatever she could hold in Read More

Fr. Glenn: Easter Resolutions

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

A most blessed Easter day and season to all!

The Easter season, of course, is when Christians rejoice in celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from death, opening the way for His faithful to follow Him to the eternal life for which we are created, and yet may be individually lost through our own refusals to seek good and love of one another rather than selfishness and even evil. While Christians always celebrate the resurrection, the special celebratory season extends all the way to Pentecost, when they will celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the Church Read More

An Open Book: The Treasured Izraelevitz Passover Tradition

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

“Did you hear what Mirabel’s father just said?” and I snatched up the remote from Terry in the middle of watching the Disney movie “Encanto”. My patient wife, who has too many times relinquished control of the remote so I can rewind a scene because A) I couldn’t understand what was just said, B) I noticed something in the background scenery that I found interesting or abnormal, or C) I wanted to stop and share some obscure Wikipedia nugget I remembered about the historical context of the movie, has now found a fourth reason, D) the use of a polite substitute for a Spanish Read More

Fr. Glenn: Fair Weather Friends

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

You may have seen last week various videos of former President Obama’s warm reception at the White House. Whether a supporter or critic of the President, it was sad to see Biden seemingly ignored by the same persons who had feted him only a little more than a year ago in the campaign. His administration now beset with problems like inflation, possible recession looming, the Ukraine war and low approval scores, his true friends seemed nowhere to be found. The President may have recalled Walter Winchell: “A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”
