NHCC News:ALBUQUERQUE ― Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a night of fun with Jenny and the Mexicats at the National Hispanic Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17 in the Grand Ball Room, Pete V. Domenici Education Center.
Tickets are $25, and are available from the NHCC Box Office, at (505).724.4771, or at www.nhccnm.org. The event is presented in partnership with Pop Fizz, AMP Concerts, and Tricklock Company.
Jenny and the Mexicats have been described as a “revelation in true world music,” as well as a band that “came together in an amazing way.” Lead singer Jenny, originally from London, was invited to live in Madrid by bassist Icho, who then contacted flamenco guitarist Pantera, with whom he had played in rockabilly and punk groups in their native Mexico. Pantera then brought in David, a Spanish cajónplayer with whom he had shared flamenco stages. The result of this fusion of nationalities and personalities is a band that smashes through genres including pop, flamenco, reggae, mariachi, jazz, folk, and cumbia.
“What they’ve done with their influences is create this really impressive mix of rockabilly, cumbia, jazz, flamenco, and they perform it both in English and in Spanish-very cool sound.” (Felix Contreras, host of NPR’s Alt Latino)
The band’s performance at the NHCC is a lively dance party concert, with food, beer, and alcohol on sale from Pop Fizz, including the popular restaurant’s signature paletas.
