FBI: ABQ Man Sentenced For Role In Covering Up Murder

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE — An Albuquerque man was sentenced Monday to 199 days in prison for assisting in the cover-up of the kidnapping and murder of Thomas Anthony Brown in the To’Hajiilee area of the Navajo Nation.

There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, on or about June 24, 2020, Antonio Chaco assaulted Thomas Brown outside Chaco’s trailer home. Chaco then rolled Brown in a square of carpet and transported him to a remote desert location. There, Chaco continued his violent assault and ultimately abandoned Brown without water, food, or shelter.

Child & Adult Care Food Program Provides Free Meals To Thousands Of New Mexicans In FY26

SANTA FE — The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is providing free nutritious meals and snacks to thousands of New Mexicans at participating childcare centers, schools, and adult care facilities statewide in Fiscal Year 2026.

OSE Cracks Down On Illegal Water Well Sales

OSE News:

ROSWELL — New Mexico’s Office of the State Engineer (OSE) issued noncompliance warnings to the owners of 20 water wells in the Carlsbad and Capitan Basins after field investigations revealed water may have been diverted for commercial sales without a valid water right permit.

The well-owners have been ordered to cease the unpermitted water diversions and contact the OSE District 2 office to rectify the situation. If the unauthorized diversions continue, the OSE will pursue legal recourse by seeking a compliance order against the responsible party.

There was very limited stocking of trout last week in Northern New Mexico. This reflects the conditions. Rising water  temperatures and low streamflows limit the amount of water where hatchery trout can be stocked. 

One river that seems to be holding up well is the Pecos River. The Eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo mountains have been getting more monsoon rain than North-Central and Northwestern New Mexico.

Laguna Wildfire Information Moves To Weekly Updates

The Laguna Wildfire, sparked by lightning on June 25, has now consumed 17,415 acres and remains 78 percent contained. The fire is in the Coyote Ranger District, 8 miles north of N.M. 96 and west of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness.

Note: Updates will be provided once a week, starting today, Monday, Aug. 4, unless significant activity or changes occur. The next Laguna Wildfire Daily Update will be provided Monday, Aug. 11.
