At approximately 7 p.m. MDT Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Joint Information Center (JIC) after a radiological control technician detected what was believed to be elevated radiological readings on a filter from an air particulate sampler located where air is exhausted from the WIPP underground.

Back To School Tax Free Holiday Aug. 7-9

The annual New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 and concludes at midnight Sunday Aug. 9.

During New Mexico’s biggest weekend for back to school shopping, the state suspends collection of gross receipts tax on sales of qualifying items.

Some qualifying items include:

  • All clothing and shoes under $100 per unit;
  • School supplies under $30 per unit;
  • Computers under $1,000; and
  • Computer equipment under $500.

WIPP: Calculation Error Causes False Positive At Surface Air Monitoring Station … EOC Deactivating

Radiological Control Technicians have determined a calculation error caused a false positive at a surface air monitoring station.

Multiple radiological frisks and swipes have been performed and show no radiological contamination. Based on this information, the event has been terminated. There is NO RELEASE.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) issued two recent updates to this evening’s earlier notification that the Emergency Operations Center was activated.

At approximately 6 p.m. today, Radiological Control Technicians detected minute levels of radiation on the filter at Station B where air is exhausted from the WIPP underground.
