Udall, Heinrich, Pearce to Host DOE Secretary in Carlsbad Regarding Recovery at WIPP

WASHINGTON, D.C.–U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce have announced that U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will visit Carlsbad Aug. 12 for a discussion about the ongoing recovery at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
 
Last month, the lawmakers invited Moniz to visit to get an update on cleanup efforts and to talk with workers and local officials about WIPP’s importance to the community and to our national defense, as the only deep geologic repository for Cold War transuranic waste.

Los Alamos Hosts 2014 NM Master Gardner Conference

The New Mexico Master Gardner (NMMG) organization held its annual conference July 24-26 in Los Alamos.

Participants attended a variety of gardening workshops and toured downtown Los Alamos including stops at the Bradbury Science Museum, Los Alamos Historical Museum and the Smart Grid House.

Belen Airport Gets Nearly $4 Million For New Runway

Nearly $4 million to build a new runway at the Alexander Municipal Airport in Belen will finally be available now that Belen Airport officials have received authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA authorization was the last step needed before the bidding process for construction could begin.

According to Belen’s airport manager, Robert Uecker, the proposal to build a new runway was prompted for safety reasons.

Study Shows Film Industry Tax Incentives Reap Big Pay-Off For New Mexico’s Economy

The New Mexico Film Office reports that a recent state-commissioned study shows that film production spending in New Mexico has created nearly 15,900 well-paying jobs and generated more than $1 billion in economic impact, thus resulting in a positive outcome of film production tax credits.

Los Alamos Public Schools received high marks from the New Mexico Public Education Department. Three schools were awarded “A” grades and four schools earned “B” grades for 2014.
