Los Alamos Rotary Club President James Nesmith received a club banner from Oscar Batres of the Nordeste Rotary Club of Guatemala City at Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting at the Dixie Girl Restaurant. Oscar and his wife Johanna Batres are visiting the area this week. Eight Los Alamos High School students have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program:
- Charlotte Berg;
- Matthew Davenport;
- Justine Dombrowski;
- Victoria Hypes; Ariel Koh;
- Charles Mielke; Nathan Phillps; and
- Jing Xie.

Martinez and the students will join millions of others in reading the same book, on the same day to promote literacy and attempt to break the current world record.

Public Comments Requested for Replacing Frijoles Canyon Section of Park’s Electrical System

The National Park Service (NPS) has initiated the process to plan an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the replacement of the Frijoles Canyon section of electrical systems at Bandelier National Monument.
The purpose of the proposed action is to provide the Monument with a reliable electrical system that is readily and easily serviceable and complies with Los Alamos County and federal regulations. The current electrical system is approximately 50 years old. It has exceeded its life expectancy of 30-40 years, and is in need of replacement.

Luján Encourages Uninsured New Mexicans to Sign Up for Health Care on New Exchange

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District encourages uninsured New Mexicans, those with insurance who are seeking a more affordable plan, and small businesses with less than 50 employees to sign up for coverage through the new health care exchange that opened Tuesday.
As of Oct. 1, individuals can sign up for health insurance that will begin Jan. 1, 2014. Small businesses can start comparing plans today and can sign up beginning Nov. 1.

Dr. Kathleen Ramsay invited the Los Alamos Daily Post to spend a typical busy Saturday with her at her Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic in Espanola as she performed surgeries on birds with injured wings.
Ramsay explained that it’s a common injury because many birds target their meal from high in the sky,
