The Histories of Chocolate, Mate y Más opens Dec. 9 and runs through Jan. 4, 2014 in the Hispanic Heritage Wing at the Museum of International Folk Art.

Wrecked Paint Truck Removed From Mountain

The truck left the highway Sept. 18 and landed 200-300 yards down a steep rugged cliff into Bandelier National Monument property. The driver of the semi was able to escape the mangled wreck and crawl partially up the cliff, according to a witness at the scene. Kelvin Doe, 15, is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters.

Completely self-taught, Doe has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.

Doe became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT.

Public Comment Sought on Las Conchas Reforestation Project

The public is being invited to comment on a proposal to reforest approximately 1,800 to 2,510 acres of national forest system lands that were burned during the 2011 Las Conchas Fire on the Jemez and Española Ranger Districts of the Santa Fe National Forest.

 

The purpose of this project is to reestablish forest cover to areas severely damaged by the Las Conchas fire.

Christmas Tree Sales Begin at Valles Caldera

JEMEZ SPRINGS – Beginning this Friday, Nov. 23, and every weekend through Dec. 23, the Valles Caldera will sell pre-cut Christmas trees for $20 each while supplies last.

Trees will be sold from the Valle Grande Staging Area, which is open 9.a.m.-5 p.m., Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Valle Grande Staging Area is accessible through the Valles Caldera National Preserve’s main gate, which is located at mile marker 39.2 along N.M. 4.

Proceed through the main gate and down the road approximately two miles to the Valle Grande staging area.

Paint Truck Wreckage Removal Underway at Bandelier

BANDELIER News:

The National Park Service and a construction company began removing the wreckage materials from a vehicle accident resulting in spilled paint within Bandelier’s boundary.

Crews began work last Friday and are expected to continue into this week. At this time, staff does not anticipate a road closure during removal operations.
