The Los Alamos girls’ soccer team improved to 5-1 on the season with a dominating 10-4 win over the Taos Tigers (3-1) Tuesday at Sullivan Field.

The Tigers would strike first on a lucky bounce goal that squeezed past Senior goalkeeper Ashley Atencio in the first five minutes. Atencio would end up making four saves on the day before giving way to freshman goalkeeper Annika Fox, who made three saves.

Scoring came early and often for the ‘Toppers, who answered the call after dropping a surprising double overtime match to St. Michaels.

“We had trouble putting the ball in the net,” Head Coach Ann Cernicek said about the loss, “and tonight we come out and score ten. I think the girls responded well.”

Responded well, indeed. Senior Elsa Gram, junior Alissa Haagenstad and sophomores Kaitlyn McGrane and Alyssa Parker scored two goals apiece. Juniors Alix Hailey and Vianey Terrazas each added a goal as well.

The game was not without a little drama. Los Alamos was called for a pair of fouls allowing Taos to score on a couple of penalty kicks within two minutes of each other. The officials also called a questionable yellow card on the ‘Toppers for going after a hard fought bouncer in the first half.

Los Alamos has a quick turn-around as they head to Albuquerque to take part in the Albuquerque Academy Tournament. The ‘Toppers will face Goddard out of Roswell at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

Los Alamos (2-4) beat the Pojoaque Valley Elkettes 3-1 Tuesday evening. The ‘Toppers will face St. Michaels at 7 p.m. Thursday in Los Alamos.
